I’ve been hesitant about sharing this but with my Dads permission, I feel it’s an important story.
My father was diagnosed with HNSCC (Head & Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma) in August of 2018. Because it hadn’t metastasized (spread) we were told it was treatable and the prognosis was good. He did Chemo (Cisplatin) and radiation therapy. He had a port placed for treatment and a feeding tube. It was a long and tough time. Treatment started 10/2018 and ended 12/2018.
After treatment is finished, you have to wait a few months to get new scans & see if treatment worked. Dads PETSCAN ON 5/10/19 showed a small spot remained in a single lymph node. The doctors decided to surgically remove it and we were sent on our way, told he was cancer free.
Around 9/2019 my Dads voice was sounding different to me & I was scared to death that the cancer may be back and in his lungs. I requested a PETSCAN and it was done on 9/26/19.
The results were not good. The cancer was back and had metastasized (spread) to his left lung, prostate, and mediastinal node. Once cancer spreads to other organs, you are considered terminal. Stage IV. The doctor gave him 1 1/2 years to live and decided to do “palliative immunotherapy.” Because the cancer had a certain protein (PDL1), he was treated with Keytruda. The doctor made it clear that the cancer would not go away and the hope was to keep it from growing. To buy him some time.
When I shared the awful news with my family, my son Rick sent me a video about a man, Joe Tippens, who was given 3 months to live but beat the odds with a very unorthodox treatment. I vetted him, read all the studies I could and decided that Joes protocol was safe as long as I keep a close eye on Dads liver. I showed Dad the video, which I’ll share here, and he wanted to start the protocol immediately. So we started the protocol in early December and the immunotherapy 12/30/19. The doctor ordered scans in this past May and They. Are. Clear.
Last week when we went to my Dads PCP, he said when he saw the results the first thing he was going to ask me is what I was doing that I didn’t tell him about. I worked closely with my fathers pcp and he ordered all tests I asked for, we spoke about studies and he also worked with me on off label drugs that are show in some studies to block the pathways to cancer.
The way my fathers pcp reacted is what made me feel I should share this publicly, not only in group. He said he and Dads oncologist could not believe the results and that he knew I was doing something that I didn’t tell him about. We spoke for a while and he asked me so many questions about the treatment, how it works, where we get it, etc. So the plan is for Dad to continue with Keytruda and to do more scans in a few months. I believe that if his scans are still clear at that time, they will stop treatment and send him home to LIVE.
