Ustad Bismillah Khan, the noted Sehnai(An Indian musical instrument) maestro was born in a family of court musicians in the princely State of Dhumraon in Bihar, India on 21st March, 1916. He had his early training in Sehnai playing from his uncle Ali Bux 'Vilayatu' who was a Sehnai player attached to Kashi Viswanath temple, Baranasi. During his long carrier of Sehnai player Bismillah Khan had performed in almost all the capitals of the world. One of his famous performance was the recital of his instrument at Red Ford in the morning of India's independence. The great master used to lead a very simple life. His earthly possessions included his Sehnai, his bed and a lantern. He always traveled by a cycle-rickshaw. The maestro was showered with a number of rewards like Padmashri, Padmabhushan, Padmabibhusana and later the highest Indian civilian award, Bharat Ratna in . This great musician breathed his last on August 21, 2006.
