This was my first car 1962 Beetle, I bought after saving up for years doing odd jobs after school. I managed to save enough to buy this beetle when I got my licence.
Haha. Excuse the corny 80's pose.
It was a wreck and my Father and I spent 8 months repairing it and fixing up the aesthetics.
Resprayed Malachite green, one piece front windows, replaced interior seats. replaced with 1952 front fenders, with slanting headlamps, resprayed tsw rims, recessed back number plate, removed bonnet handle, racing mirrors, molded front spoiler kit, cowley exhaust, twin carb engine. To mention just a few
Looking back it was the best 8 month I had spent bonding with my Dad and brought us closer together. We did however have a ton of arguments in that time, but it was exactly those arguments which helped us get to know each other better.
I can still remember the first time I took her out of our garage for "Suzie's" (my beetles name) maiden voyage. I drove straight to my girlfriend's house and we went for a long slow drive out into the Karoo.
I then spent the next decade travelling back and forth from Kimberley to Cape Town as I was studying in Cape town so I drove 1000km at least twice a year. And also went to the Grahams Town Arts festival for 10 years in a row. Besides numerous other short trips in between.
I certainly had my fair share of problems. But the beauty about the beetle was that it was simple and even I with my limited knowledge could generally fix whatever issues it had. Just always made sure I had extra oil and a needle and seat and I could get Suzie started no matter what. And once started she would get you to wherever you needed to go. ๐ฌ
I had Suzie for 10 years and reluctantly sold it to buy a more "practical" car. I regret that though. Wish I could find her and buy her back.
Loved my bug, had the best times and created the best memories.
What was your first car? And experience, tell us in the comments below ๐ฌ
Happy Thursday everyone. Find the beauty.
