Kaloo : simple, fun Ghanaian game using car number plates
Find yourself a very competetive friend and just perch yourselves at a safe distance close enough to a busy street; you guys are just about to have one of the best times playing this simple game that is popular in Ghana; Kaloo!
This game simply has its players looking out for car number plates with at least two (2) consecutively repeated numbers. For example a car number plate like AS-2566-12 is a 66 Kaloo because the number 6 repeats itself consecutively. Another number GR-1124-16 is a 11 Kaloo (said as "one one kaloo") because 1 repeats itself consecutively. THE FIRST PERSON TO SPOT, POINT AT AND SHOUT THE KALOO (i.e "11 kaloo") gets the points.
You can simply keep score by the number of cars each person has spotted or kick it up a notch by keeping weighted scores: In this case a 11 Kaloo fetches you 1 point whereas a 99 kaloo fetches a person 9 points.
In some cases the weighted score is doubled when there are 3 consecutively repeated numbers in the number plate (e.g. "AS-7770-14" would fetch 7x2=14 points).
It's your choice to set a winning point limit (maybe the first person to get 20 Kaloo points wins) or like most people do, you just play till you realise you want to go get a snack somewhere.
It could really be fun with old friends, or could be a great way to bond with someone new you meet at a busstop.
