After yesterday’s post on IQ and creativy I was thinking about a story that I would like to share with you. This is all about the children who really had a special place in my heart.

These were children with a lower IQ.  There were very seldom more than twelve children in this class and they were always friendly to everyone. They all had such good manners and were very well disciplined. All these specific children were always thankful for being able to learn something as they had great difficulty in learning.

I always encouraged them as this was something they really needed. I normally did class visits where I evaluated the teacher’s work as well as the kids work, and I used to enjoy going to their class the most.

One year on Arbour day the first day of spring, I decided to take the special class to a special ceremony. It was plant a tree day, as on Arbour day we all planted a tree.  I decided to take this class to a special arbour day, where the mayor of our mining community was having this special occasion and planting a tree himself.

All the children got a chance to plant a tree as well. If you had seen the Mayor you would have thought that he looked very smart with his gold chain around his neck and that he was rather intelligent. But he was definitely not the sharpest pencil in the box.

He then had to make a speech to welcome everybody and tell them about arbour day. He had to read his speech from a card, which I think his secretary wrote for him. He really struggled to read what was typed. After everything was finalised we got back into the bus. This is something I will never forget, because one of the boys said to me, he now knows that he can one day become Mayor. I said yes you can but why do you think so, and his answer was that the mayor had just as much trouble reading as they all do, and he was mayor so why can they not do the same work. I told them never to tell anybody that the mayor had struggled to read, and up to this day I am sure that they never revealed this to anyone.

Thank you for reading my post and may all have a lovely day.
