This is a skill that I have been working on with the long term goal being a perfect handstand without the need to "kick up". Taking this approach, I will be able to just Stand up into a hand stand from various static positions.
The first progression in achieving this is called "Frog Stand". This helps to begin to learn how to balance on your hands, strengthens your wrists and shoulders and also helps to develop "Bent Arm Strength". I spent about 6 months on learning this one to ensure the health/safety of my wrists. Your wrist can be injured quite easily through Calisthenics and Skills training so conditioning and strengthening my wrists was a top priority in my mind.
Once I became comfortable with frog stand and I could hold it comfortably for 30 seconds, it was time to progress the movement into Crow Pose by lifting my hips up higher in order to have my knees up on my triceps. This progression requires more core strength in order to lift your hips and also increases the load on your shoulders and arms/wrists and requires more balance to stay stable.
It has been 4-5 months now that I have been working this one and I am feeling pretty comfortable in Crow Pose now. I am currently just working on achieving a comfortable; perfect form 30 second hold before working on the next progression. For the next progression will begin to take my knees off my arms completely, one at a time.
When it comes to Calisthenics Skill Training, you cannot be in any kind of a hurry. Rushing skills training will only result in injury and sloppy form so it isn't worth it.
