In #MESExperiments 53 I have uploaded the famous synchronization of 32 metronomes experiment from the Ikeguchi Laboratory in Japan on September 14, 2012. They placed the metronomes (which are devices that oscillate like a clock and produce an audible click or other sound) onto the same platform which is hung by a string. As each of the metronomes oscillates initially at their own frequency, they all get slightly nudged towards the frequency that is closest to the largest number of metronomes. Eventually all of the metronomes are beating in sync, but in this specific experiment, there is one of the metronomes that is beating in opposite phase (but still in sync). Eventually this too beats in the same phase as the rest. This is a fascinating demonstration of resonance and has wide-reaching implications beyond just physics, but in human social settings too!
