yes, many people go ski-touring. They slide smoothly on the surface. But since we are in mountains, they have special layer the on bottoms of their skis. It's like shark's skin - smooth when go forward, but abrasive when the skis try do slide back going uphill.
My party didn't have skis, so we had to plow thru the snow. It's impossible to maintain a walking rhythm and each step counts double (hence my high count, even though the distance was just above 16km)
