España (well, some catholic organisations from Spain, not the government) has sent a bus and some 10 vans to Poland with aid for Ukraine. On their way back, they will take refugees. A huge relief for us in Poland.
A friend of mine and I drove today to Krakow with a family of 6 (plus a dog) to meet the Spanish. The Ukrainian family will be taken care of there. As it happens, I speak Russian and Spanish, but neither fluently. I can however converse in both.
I was in a situation of translating between the family of Ukrainian women and a Spanish driver. I noticed how my “language coprocessor” struggled to switch between the two languages. I said few words in Spanish to the women and few in Russian to the driver. Funny, but in the end I passed to both sides the needed information.
Later on I translated between Polish or English into Russian and didn’t have the problem (Polish is my native language and I am fluent in English).
I think when I had to switch between a language I know well and one that I am not fluent with, my brain coped well. But switching between two languages where I lack the fluency, was difficult. It was a good brain exercise, though.
Muchas gracias a los españoles por su ayuda.
