My day started at 2am. A call from our coordinator and I drove to bus station to pickup a Mom with her little precious daughter. Transported them to our refugee Center
4:30am back to bed. Another call woke me at 7:30. A long excepted and awaited one. The Mom of my sister’s friend finally managed to get out of Voznesensk and got to Lviv. Expected arrival time at PL/UA border was ~16. I did the math (350km drive to the border) and agreed to pickup the distressed daughter at 12:30. My body wanted back to bed, but I knew the best thing I could do to prepare for the long ride was…. a 10km walk with fast pace
Did the driving. There are so many people picking up refugees that only buses are allowed to get near the border. We walked the last 500m. It was so gratifying to see Ludmila finding her Mom among the crowds who crossed into Poland. I also applauded all the volunteers at work in a makeshift “tent city” ready to serve the weary guest. Didn’t spent long there, but my impression was that it had been well organised and managed.
Ludmilas Mom had started the journey to safety on Wednesday morning. Walk, trains, bus, walk and over 30hrs later she safe in my car.
