A significant part of my today’s steps were... two museums. The first one was an underground tour of a silver (and lead) mine in Tarnowskie Góry, Poland
First we listened to a brief history of the mine. The story begun in 1490 when a local farmer unearthed a shiny stone. It was galana - lead ore that contains silver.
Soon a silver fever started. The silver-rich rocks were in shallow deposits so miners simply dug shafts. Soon the authorities took control and in 1528 a set mining regulations were issued.
Over years, more than 22 thousands shafts were dug. They were later connected by a system of horizontal corridors, totalling 150km. Few chambers with lead and silver deposits were discovered as well.
The corridors also served as ways to direct water out of the mine. A clever system, based on gravity was designed. The water from the mine, filtered by layers of rocks, was good quality and was used by the city above. This water recovery system is listed together with the mine itself as UNESCO World Heritage site.
The second museum I visited today was the Silesian Museum in Katowice. It is hosted in modernised buildings that belonged to a coal mine.
An active day combined with an entertaining history lesson.
