A robot sprints on four wheels in a rocky, rock-like land that looks like the surface of a distant planet in a science fiction film.
This scene is not in outer space but at the foot of the most active volcanoes of Europe. Mount Etna in Sicily is a machine test site up to three feet ahead of a future mission to the moon.
The test is supervised by the German Space Center, which runs Germany's space program. The program includes experts from Germany, Britain, the United States and Italy to conduct research into the exploration of robots for harsh environments in order to develop robotic equipment for use in space.
"This is to simulate a virtual future landing mission on the moon or Mars and use a lot of existing robots to transport and install various equipment," said Boris Benki, a volcanologist at the National Institute of Volcanoes in Catania near Mount Etna. Scientists also hope to use robots to explore the depths of Mount Etna and extract some useful technical data on earthquakes.
Techniques from the Etna tests will be applied to Moon missions or Mars exploration. An initial phase of the robot test is nearing completion in the Piano del Lago volcano, a desolate region ravaged by strong winds.
A network of equipment will be installed, including rafters and unmanned aerial vehicles, to monitor the seismic activity accurately simulating the network to be used on the moon.
