"Designer babies" got me laughing! I mean, it's crazy how far the human mind can go in imaginations and really cool too. It actually shows how much greater and incomprehensible the mind of God, our creator is. Man was first created and he multiplies by birth, many children and have filled the earth gradually to continue.
Babies have always been a blessing to marriages, especially for those who understand what it means to have a baby and care for them till they become adults to take care of themselves and for others too. It's one of the beautiful cycles of life and I think one of the things that makes it beautiful is the dynamics.
No parent knows the kind of child they'll birth until they do and sometimes, the child is amazing at birth but grows to be something else in adulthood and regret finds it's way in. Nothing is certain in raising a child, it's why there are no perfect manual or guide to have the best children in the world. Everyone is trying for their first time.
So it would sound like a really good deal to be able to pick or choose the kind of babies one get to have by genetical modifications. That sounds like having a baby that will have all the qualities the parents wants him or her to have. It's a beautiful deal but as it has always been, nothing that is invented by human is free of flaws at all.
First of all, humans are imperfect so what this parents might see as good qualities and best genes for their child may be seen as bad to another parent for their child. That alone will make the world filled with children and adults who could still be immoral, full of vices or badly raised. The dynamics of children will still remain.
I've heard a lot stories about couples who are so unfortunate to birth children that looks like monsters, badly impaired babies or even dead ones. It would be so easy to agree to a gene modification for parents like this to avoid birthing children that will test them all their lives. But then, we can't know the parents with such fate.
So long parents still love their children however they come, I don't think there is the need to make parents choose their kind of babies. It even goes against God's plan for man, if we as humans keep choosing what we want by our own wisdom (which is foolishness to God). I'll say we focus on living a good life in every aspects to teach kids.
Understanding that being given a choice to make in the kind of children to have doesn't really remove the problem from the society but how we keep trying to raise the children God has blessed us with, to grew up in good morals and standards, there is no need of tampering with what a child could become for what's uncertain.
