Hello, my virtual friends on Hive. I hope you are all doing well and feeling energized to start the week.

Whenever I would stroll through Havana, I was always attentive to the details of the landscape—there is graffiti all over the city. These pieces were captured by my phone camera quite some time ago. The colonial buildings catch my eye, but my steps always lead me straight to the graffiti, those stories that burst with color on the walls and transform this beautiful Havana avenue into an open-air gallery.

Graffiti is like marble poetry—even when faded, like these pieces, it always leaves and conveys a message. They look as if the city is shedding its skin. Each graffiti featuring faces of people or animals has a gaze with eyes that seem to follow the passerby. These walls speak. They tell what we sometimes don’t say out loud, vibrating with the energy of urban artists who have turned public spaces into a visual feast. For a moment, I stopped before the figure of Martí, our national hero.

Then I paused before a feminine face resembling an Indigenous woman and a man in a thoughtful pose, as if searching for solutions to his problems. Each work is an answer, a question, a collective concern. The most fascinating part is seeing how these graffiti pieces blend with the city’s architecture without creating discord or anachronism. It’s contemporary art embracing centuries-old columns where our roots rest. It’s the feeling of knowing that a significant part of Havana’s history can be found here, on this street.

These murals are more than urban decoration—they are mirrors in which we, the city’s inhabitants, see ourselves. In their vibrant colors, we see an abstract landscape, sometimes incomprehensible but necessary, that makes us feel the warmth of their city. Every time I walk through Havana, I discover something new. Today, from afar, I wait patiently for the day I can walk its streets again.

Havana, despite its decay, is a city that constantly reinvents itself. These painted walls are a kind of diary we share. And I am just a nostalgic admirer trying to understand the history I’ve been destined to live. On Havana’s Prado, art lives where people live—in the street, within reach, free, and above all, fleeting.
