Except for local wildlife, you can pretty much have the river and the sunrise to yourself on cold winter mornings. It's a great time to see eagles flying or muskrats and beavers swimming.
While the family was here this week the temperatures were very cold but my Chicago city kids bundled up in cold weather gear and took the opportunity be out along the river,

Looking across the river to the North Pavillion in Riverside Park.

Riverside Park covers 87 acres and runs along the beautiful Rock River. The park features scenic overlooks, picnic areas and pavilions, and boat launches.

Recreational facilities include a splash pad (open seasonally), horseshoe pits, a zipline, disc golf course, and shuffleboard, tennis and pickleball courts. In the winter, enjoy sledding and cross country skiing.

For golf enthusiasts, an excellent 18-hole course — Riverside Golf Course — is located at the West Park Entrance.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail runs through the park, featuring the Devil’s Staircase portion of the trail. The Ice Age Trail is a 1,000-mile footpath that highlights landscape features as it travels through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas. The trail is entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only 11 National Scenic Trails.

Colorful sunrises often are predictors of approaching storms. It's caused by particles (dust, water) scattering shorter blue light, leaving longer red/pink wavelengths reflected on the clouds, making the phenomenon beautiful yet foreboding for the day ahead. On this day the sky predicted correctly. We received a couple inches of fresh snow during the afternoon.
