Nothing new and exotic in my backyard this week. Downy Woodpeckers are widespread in North America, and are common at feeders and in parks.

They are the smallest of the Woodpeckers and are black-and-white checkered with a head that is boldly striped. They have a broad white stripe down the center of their backs and males have a small red patch on the back of the head.

Both parents incubate the eggs and bring billfuls of insects to feed the nestlings. They leave the nest about 20-25 days after hatching, and I see them following their parents around for a few weeks after. They have one brood per year.
