Allllll righty home edders how we doing this fine day now that school has officially returned and for little miss its her first week at prep. And do we have something awesome to report to you all today. If you've been following along you'd know that cooking is a favourite in our family and who can go past a good meal?
I also feel that cooking not just any food but good healthy food is something that is important and with it we also pass down culture, heritage and our own pieces of ourselves.
For example everytime I cook lasagne I cook it the way my nonna did and it reminds me of her everytime and it is a meal I will go to when I am feeling down or alone and it's as if I am sitting at my nonnas as a kid again with her.
But tonight isn't about me, it's about little miss and as you are all probably aware by now she has turned 5 wo0t wo0t exciting and scary at the same time because now I have my own little human that is an age indicator on how old I am becoming 😞.
The exciting thing about today's class was that little miss finally used the cooker all on her ownsome and yes we did go for French Toast again (not sure it's called that in other parts of the world). But bread dipped in egg is one of our favourite breakfasts.
Now, the exciting thing about today's breakfast was that little miss used the stove all by herself, I did help her turn it on as they are child proof but today she was cooking with gas!
Thats not to say she has never used the stove top before because she has but it has always been in a supported capacity where I'd hold things and I'd most the time place the things on the frypan. When it came to turning we would do it together.
But today I sat back and only provided verbal support while she took care of the entire cooking process from mixing the eggs, getting the bread, dipping them in the eggs and putting them on the frypan.
It was a moment she was delighted to participate in and if all came about from her lead, she asked me when she would be able to cook on the stove by herself. Before letting her do it I asked her a few questions about the stove nothing major just prying to see what she had learned over the years.
And through that I was pretty confident in her ability so offered her to take care of the entire breakfast process for little bloke and myself. She looked at me with both surprise and confusion and couldn't believe it.
We were all good until we turned the stove on and she started having second thoughts so we talked through the process and how the fire heats the pan and as long as we don't touch the pan and we focus and concentrate we will be OK.
She did really well from using a little bit of oil on the pan to almost timing when to flip I tired guiding her but also putting the decision in her hands. Every time she asked me should I flip it? I would respond not sure chef what do you think?
I did this because the way I cook isn't through measuring time but through feeling, I'm sure a lot of you would understand what I mean but for those that don't. When you cook food it's not always about how long it has been on the hot plate for.
It's about the way it smells, feels and even sizzles that let's you know it's ready to be flipped or ready to remove. This is the most important aspect of cooking and it will make or break a dish. No cook book in the world can give you the exact cooking time but rather approximates. The rest is upto you to decide when.
Little miss was super proud of herself and unfortunately mumma bear wasn't around as she was at work but little miss saved two slices for when she came home.
I didn't sent her the pictures and waiting for little miss to tell her when she came home, if was her surprise to tell and her achievement to be proud of. Mumma bear was impressed but not so much with dad 🤣
For some reason the French Toast tasted 999999 times better, but then all food does when someone else cooks it for you 😋
