I like winter, it's my favorite season. :) I'm an active person and I love winter sports.

Winter is a fascinating season and the scenery is wonderful. Here are 11 interesting facts about winter:

  • About 12% of the Earth's surface is covered with snow and ice

  • The coldest temperature recorded on Terra was −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F) at Vostok Station, Antarctica, in 1983.

  • You will be surprised, but in winter season, the Earth is at the smallest distance from the Sun.

  • A snowflake usually falls at a speed of almost 5 km per hour.

  • Fear of snow, especially when caught in the snow is called chionophobia.

  • The first Olympic Winter Games were held in Chamonix, France, in 1924.

  • The largest snowflake fell on 28 January 1887 in Keogh, Montana and measures 38 cm in width and 20 cm in thickness.

  • Plum tree symbolize perseverance, hope, purity and beauty in China. This is because it is among the only trees that bloom and whose aroma feels during the winter.
