In the hustle and bustle of everyday city life, every passerby casts a shadow on the sidewalk or is frozen into a silhouette. “Between Light and Shadow” is a photo essay I’ve been working on, which I’m sharing today as my entry for the #monomad contest.

It’s a visual exercise that helps disguise the shots I’m looking for when I’m photographing on the streets. It’s a way to distract the subjects so they don’t realize they’re about to be photographed—or that they already have been. Pointing the camera at the ground disguises the act, and you can still get some interesting photos. I like to be discreet when photographing on the streets; I avoid letting them realize “that I’ve stolen their soul,” as indigenous peoples used to say about not wanting to be photographed.
