Throughout the history of his existence, the Kingdom of Deli was formed in the early 17th century, and in the mid-20th century decided to join the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
Despite joining NKRI, until now the Deli Sultanate was still active, in which the Sultan acted as the Malay customary head.
Now, Sultan Deli is appointed by Tuanku Mahmud Lamantjiji Perkasa Alam who is still 18 years old. He was appointed Sultan in 2005 when he was seven years old to replace his father Tuanku Otteman Mahmud Paderap Perkasa Alam.

The Deli Sultanate is one of the big kngdoms in North Sumatra. The Deli name is derived from the history of the first King Deli: Tuanku Gotjah, he is a hero from the descendants of King Akbar in Hindustan, India.
