Hey, is it ok if I leave early today? You know, with the storms and stuff?
I looked up from my screen. Before me was a young chap with the most ridiculous hair. It looked like a cow had licked it half off his head.
Eh, what? Leave early you say?
I looked out the window. There was apparently a storm blowing outside. The weather reports had given out amber warnings of doom.
Outside my window however there were just a few brown leaves dancing with each other in the wind.
Cow-Lick looked nervous as if I had asked him to sit on my lap.
Um, yeah. Like, the trains are all cancelled and it will be really difficult for me to get home. So I thought I would ask?
He beseeched me with eyes that resembled boiled sheep's testicles.
I looked about to see if he was really talking to me. I had no idea who he was. I hoped he wasn't a madman who had circumvented our elaborate secure entry procedures.
Luckily there was a spoon on my desk. I surreptitiously moved my hand towards it.
Sorry, let me understand. Why are you asking me?
I said this slowly so as not to enrage him, just in case he was a street-bonker.
He looked at me as if I were a donkey with a bag of chips.
Erm, well, you're my boss aren't you?
I narrowed my eyes.
I am?
Yes, so El Jefe said last week.
He did? Ah. Righto.
Well this was news to me. I dropped the spoon and instead picked up a pen and gave it a thoughtful nibble.
Cow-Lick shuffled his feet.
So can I go then?
He asked, his voice tinged with hope.
Aye, if you like.
I said.
He grinned like a freshly caught scallop and scampered off.
It seemed like moments later El Jefe materialised at my desk.
Hey did you let Cow-Lick away home early?
He bellowed in a none too friendly fashion.
I leaned back in my magnificent chair and removed the pen from my mouth before waving it at him like a wand.
Yes. Yes I did actually.
El Jefe harrumphed belligerently and pawed at the ground with his leathery hooves.
Did you tell him he will have to make the time up?
I sighed and looked out the window at the gently swaying trees.
No, I didn't even know I was his boss.
El Jefe fizzed in a purple froth.
Right. Well you bloody are. Read the adverse weather policy before you go sending people home, right?
I saluted his back as he stomped off.
Hmm, I am not so sure this boss malarkey will be much fun.
