Water hyacinth can reproduce very quickly.It produces a large number of seeds which can germinate even after 30 years.The most well-known water hyacinth,Eichhornia crassipes,breeds overnight and doubles in about two weeks.Water hyacinth is now mainly used as a fertilizer and provides feed to cattle in flood prone areas during the monsoon season.In addition,the haor area is used to protect the soil from waves by enclosing it with bamboo in the adjoining area.It is believed that a Brazilian tourist,who was fond of orchid-like flowers,brought water hyacinth to Bengal in the late 18th century.
