Kodamas for Olivia

The morning hours of last Saturday were transcendental in my daughter's life.

At 9 AM she entered a classroom of the Mathematics faculty of the University of Havana. She would take the entrance exam to the University College.

This school will be the first step on her way to the future, because from there she will enter directly into the career that will form her professionally.

In the beginning it would be to study pure Mathematics, and then she will decide whether to change to Computer Science as soon as she finishes 12th grade or after completing the first year of the career, but that will be a decision to be made later. Now, the important thing was happening in the classroom at the end of a long hallway with 18 other students.

We were with several parents waiting for more than 3 long hours to see the first student come out. In such an exam, where the best students in the subject are supposed to be the best in all of Havana, to see the first one come out at 3 hours and 20 minutes, is a sign that the exam was difficult, and so it was.

About 35 minutes later and after more than half of the students Olivia came out, I knew from her face that she had done well, despite complaining about how hard and long the exam was. Immediately my mind and body relaxed noticeably, we were more nervous than
she was...fortunately 😆.

All this story I am making you is to end here, bringing you a rock I made for her. It is a reward for her effort and I wanted it to be special.

She has a predilection for Miyazaki's movies, so doing also my best, I tried to reproduce in this little rock some of the creatures from the magical world of Princess Mononoke.

The Kodamas are one of her favorite characters. It's quite complicated to draw tiny things on a rock...everyone who has done it will know that, but I'll try my best. I started by giving a black background with some white dots like stars at night.

I added the background details little by little. Some spots that imitated the plants on the ground and some mushrooms.

Then I added each character with their little eyes and mouths. They were not perfect, but I was liking the result despite the difficulty.

Finally the magic touch, I added on top of each Kodama a layer of phosphorescent paint that will make them glow in the dark. My daughter was delighted....even me 🤭. And I hope you are too.

A la 9 AM entró en un aula de la facultad de Matemática de la Universidad de la Habana. Haría el examen de ingreso al Colegio Universitario.

Este colegio será el primer paso en su camino al futuro, pues de ahí entrará directo a la carrera que la formará profesionalmente.

En un inicio sería para estudiar Matemática pura, ya después decidirá si cambia para Ciencias de la Computación en cuanto acabe 12 grado o después de cursar el primer año de la carrera, pero eso será una decisión a tomar más adelante. Ahora, lo importante, estaba aconteciendo en el aula al fondo de un largo pasillo junto a otros 18 estudiantes.

Estuvimos con varios padres esperando más de 3 largas horas para ver salir al primer estudiante. En un examen de ese tipo, donde se supone que son los mejores estudiantes de la materia en toda La Habana, ver salir al primero a las 3 horas con 20 minutos, es muestra de que el examen estaba difícil y así fue.

Unos 35 minutos más tarde y después de más de la mitad de los estudiantes salió Olivia, supe por su cara que había salido bien, a pesar de quejarse por lo trabajoso y largo del examen. Inmediatamente mi mente y cuerpo se relajaron de manera perceptible, nosotros estuvimos más nerviosos que ella....por suerte.

Toda esta historia que les hago es para terminar aquí, trayéndoles una roca que hice para ella. Es un premio a su esfuerzo y quería que fuera especial.

Ella tiene predilección por las películas de Miyazaki, así que haciendo también mi mayor esfuerzo, traté de reproducir en esta pequeña roca algunas de las criatura del mundo mágico de la Princesa Mononoke.

Los kodamas, son uno de sus personajes favoritos. Es bien complicado dibujar cosas diminutas en una roca...lo sabrán todos los que lo han hecho, pero trataré de hacer lo mejor. Empecé dando un fondo negro con algunos puntos blancos como estrellas en la noche.

Fui agregando poco a poco los detalles del fondo. Algunas manchas que imitaban las plantas del suelo y unos hongos.

Después agregué cada personaje con sus pequeños ojos y bocas. No estaban perfectos, pero me estaba gustando el resultado pese a la dificultad.

Finalmente el toque mágico, agregué sobre cada Kodama una capa de pintura fosforescente que los hará brillar en la oscuridad. Mi hija quedó encantada....hasta yo. Y espero que ustedes también.
