In Eastern Culture elders are respected and admired. In the family, they represent that trunk with firm roots from which the branches come out and they are immortal through us. I think they should be considered Cultural Heritage of Humanity as they are an inexhaustible source of wisdom.

In my family, the encyclopedia was my grandmother: art, religion, politics, gastronomy, administration, etc., etc... and medicine. And this is what I am going to share with you today, that natural medical knowledge that the elderly possess. In my case, she.

Every ailment, discomfort, fall, cut, etc., in her hands had the cure. And with this I do not mean to relevant to conventional medicine, nor does it mean that I was denied medical assistance if required, but if they were minor ailments as she called them, that was it!

So, I leave this over here:

  • For tonsillitis, he would prepare lemon juice and baking soda in a bowl, wrap his index and middle fingers in gauze, soak them in that mixture and deeply clean the throat area.
  • For bumps, with the underside of a spoon she would press lightly on the bump and then spread butter with a little salt.
  • For styes, I would boil the leaves of a plant called plantain and then moisten a piece of absorbent cotton and place it on the eyelid.
  • For cough, I would make a liquefied of watercress, milk and aloe vera, sometimes I would add onion, it depended on the cough (I remember I used to drink it by covering my nose). Then I would smear vick vaporub on your chest and put newspaper sheets on it to warm it up, it kept you warm and zero drafts.
  • For flu, I would mix warm milk, with a little bit of butter and a pinch of salt (I loved to drink this one). Also in the mornings, at 9 o'clock sharp, she would put a tub of water in the sun until it was warm, add a fistful of salt and a few drops of iodine, she called this bombed water and said it was the closest thing to sea water and very good for relieving the flu.
  • For belly ache, chamomile tea and a hot water bottle wrapped in a cloth (to this day I always try to have hot water bottles at home).

And this is just a very small sample of her wisdom applied to natural medicine. As a good nature lover, she cultivated: chamomile, oregano orejón, aloe vera, watercress, malojillo and I could go on and on. I loved to watch her prepare her "witch's brews" as I used to call her.

At present and whenever the provisions I have at home allow me to do so, I resort to these medicinal practices. I do not have a vast knowledge of natural medicine other than what was transmitted to me, but I consider that if it is something that Pachamama is giving you and that provision comes with instructions given by pure ancestral knowledge, it is good.

Gracias y espero hayas disfrutado de ésta lectura. ¡Salud y éxito!
