On the news was recently a post on how most refugees from Africa don't die because of drowning but rather on the in land trip to Europe. The news article gave a few numbers, but did not say why the land trip to the coast of Africa is so bloody dangerous in the first place.
European countries (including Germany) negotiate with north African leaders to keep refugees within the country. This could be by trade deals, or by money and weapons being sent to them. These nations would then patrol their borders, often going through the Sahara desert to catch refugees. As a result refugees have to use off-road uncharted ways that either would get their vehicle stuck, or if they get caught the owner of the vehicle might shoo them into the desert to not get caught by police. As a result they obviously die. Refugees in the most northern African countries, such as Egypt or Morocco would there be prevented from actually crossing the European border or make their way over the sea.
Such support also keeps up military funding, making the most ruthless dictatorships stable. By trying to prevent refugees from crossing into Europe, Europe has created more refugees. Instead of spending massive amounts on military and dictatorship for a massive border that takes thousands of lives, this money would be much more useful to be put in the Language and School educating of refugees coming to Europe, needing maybe the last few years of high school to get on the job market. Refugees that survive but don't make it to Europe will simply try again. But Europe's growth created many job opportunities and possibilities for foreigners wanting to for a life without fear and hunger. And with high demands for more labor on the European job market why not just let them.
