There are some questions that just endure. Topics come and go, but the question as to whether or not God exists is debated endlessly.

I have the answer, and I am confident that I have this thorny topic completely nailed.

So here it is. Does God exist? Well, I have put a huge amount of thought into this, and I have concluded that it really doesn’t matter what I think. I have a very distinct opinion, but it’s completely irrelevant.

Let me explain:

This debate is stuck in a loop. Atheists will declare that God does not exist, believers will refute this. The subject of evidence will come up, and believers will either point to the majesty of nature as proof, or they will tell the atheists to prove that there isn’t one. Atheists will huff and puff (and possibly cite Russell’s celestial teapot) and try to blow the church in. They may even “win” the argument from a logical perspective, but we are talking about an omnipotent, omnipresent super-being that controls the entire universe on a sub-molecular and super-natural level.

Logic is kind of missing the point.

This, ultimately, comes down to one thing, and one thing only: Faith. Faith is an integral part of pretty much any given religion. In order to embrace any given religion, one must accept that a deity exists, despite the fact that there is no actual proof. If there was actual proof, one would not need to have faith. And faith is an integral part of pretty much any given religion.

I know. I said that twice. I wanted to illustrate that this is a tidy, wrapped up, impenetrable loop.

If one believes in God, one has to have faith that God exists. If one could prove that God exists, one would not need faith, and that just won’t do. So, therefore, if this omnipotent deity does exist, it would ensure that it would be unprovable from a scientific and logical perspective. This deity wants you to believe in it, despite the lack of proof.  Or maybe even because of this.

Which makes the entire debate completely redundant. Nobody can prove that God exists. And that is just the way it is supposed to be.

You’re welcome.

You can now spend your time arguing about something else, if you like.
