I wrote this a year ago, inspired by the pain of having to become strangers with a friend who, few months back, could see my soul. I can remember how I grappled with this and tried to get inured to the reality of never having that friend as a friend again. "Shit happens", we say, Shit happens and that's probably why myself and this person have become separated, the next moment you feel this indestructible wall building up between you two, impeding on the easy passage of the friendship chemistry. We shouldn't grizzle or lament, even though we would be prone to; we shouldn't go mawkish about the change. Instead, we should rise to this fate, knowing full well that not everyone we meet in this journey of life comes to stay.
Some come to teach us lessons and then leave forthwith; some act like they'll be there ab initio but never do so. We're all phases in each others life. When you are done with a particular phase and I'm not supposed to be in the next, trust me, I won't be there. So don't get shocked when your "bestie" grabs another "bestie". Remember, we are nothing but phases in each other's life. Even though friends are to be together forever, the last three letters of the word( FRIEND) is stronger than we can imagine.
An eidetic view seems to be my recompense
As I tread down the path we used to take
Images of us flood my sight
Our affinity was enviable
Enamoured by a bond so natural
But then the big question comes
Why has things suddenly changed?
We were never in dearth of mutual acumen
Our thoughts aligned and did dovetail
What really got wrong?
Did I jettison the bond?
Or did you discard them yourself?
Did I suddenly become a bore
That you needed to change over?
Or was it you who were perfunctory?
Were our tiffs suddenly unbearable
That promises once made forever became broken
Maybe they were just passersby
Maybe they were the sun itself
But surely they'd one day go
Contingently or naturally.
My erstwhile friends,
Just as you have moved on
I also have
Yes, we would all move on
As we were nothing but phases in each other's life.
