During the weekend I went to visit a close aunt, her husband, my uncle-in-law, has always been curious about my great passion for reading, every chance he gets he asks me about the last book I read and how many I have on my list to make a typical gesture of impression. I am amused, but I also like that someone is interested in it, so I have someone to share some thoughts about my readings. On this occasion it was very special because he has given me a novel as a gift, which someone in turn gave to him; I love used books, I feel they have many adventures in their pages, more than they tell.
I started the book that very day because of the happiness that it is by one of the writers I admire. I have said on a variety of occasions that I am very fond of thrillers, especially detective thrillers, and John Katzenbach is a king at it. Years ago I read The Psychoanalyst, I remember I was in my first year of college and the novel was my perfect companion between classes. This time, it caught me again with the same hunger to know what happens and why, I have read it in its entirety and I want to share with you about it, today I bring you: The Shadow Man.
It is a novel written by John Katzenbach, as I told you a recognized author of psychological thrillers. It was published in 2006, and its central theme is the Holocaust and how the survivors of this traumatic event struggle to rebuild their lives in later years. The author has a long career as a journalist specializing in judicial issues, a job that has allowed him to be a boom with writing. He rose to fame with The Psychoanalyst and The Story of the Madman, which by the way I must read, and several of his other works have been nominated for the Edgar Award, and others have been taken to the big screen. This edition is from Editorial Negra ZETA, printed in February 2014 by Grรกficas Lauki, C.A., Venezuelan workshops.
Synopsis
In the year 43 it is said that very few saw his face to tell the tale, and no one came up with his name, he was known as: Der Schatternmann, the shadow man. A nefarious informer who collaborated with the Gestapo and betrayed the Jews.
In the late twentieth century, the life of Simon Winter, a retired detective takes a sudden turn when his neighbor appears terrified in his house for fear of having seen a fastasma from the past. When she dawns strangled the next day, Simon is the only one who suspects a terrible threat: a killer is wiping out Holocaust survivors in the area.
The plot is set in the city of Miami, where Winter, a retired homicide detective, lives a monotonous and lonely life, too lonely. However, his existence is shaken in the first chapter of the book, when our protagonist is ready to say goodbye to life, he receives an unexpected visit with an anonymous letter that warns him about the presence of a ghost in the city.
Simon Winter, who believes that there is little point to his existence anymore, begins to develop a purpose: to catch The Shadow Man. During the reading we can see that Winter is a man with excellent insight and intellect, always with his sneakers, he also shows his agility and why he was a star in the police. I like how the author works that stage of life where you can no longer do what you think gave you meaning, and mixes well the feelings and emotions. Simon is a character that provokes great admiration in every chapter, and his commitment to stop the evil that stalks those around him drives him to be who he was before.
The complement is Walter Robinson, and who is my character, the cop who is assigned to the murder case in the city. Very dedicated, loyal and hard working, a character who proves that hard work makes you a place where you are. The friendship that begins to bear fruit as the two join forces is a pillar in the plot that keeps the reader interested and intrigued. At every turn, Robinson learns and gains experience alongside Winter, an interaction that is very beneficial to the plot.
Throughout the novel, Katzenbach explores the psychological aftermath that the Holocaust left on the survivors and, moreover, he skillfully takes this theme to a more up-to-date era, where it is not the main event but gives meaning to the events. The appearance of The Shadow awakens deep fear and a need to protect all those who are aware, and it is just when the secondary characters like The Rabbi and Silver and Frieda Kroner and more give atmosphere and credibility to the work.
The author also addresses the question of justice and revenge. There is a play between themes of morality and reality, which leads you to think like a murderer to be caught. The Shadow Man, is undoubtedly the most interesting character, it does not go much into it, and small clues are given throughout the story, but it is just enough and typical of a crime novel to keep the reader tense, it is an excellent character that from its cover generates fear in you.
Espy's character is also very interesting, she is the plus in the legal part and who helps in difficult moments, an excellent support for Robinson and also gives him color with her little romantic approach. For this kind of stories it is a bit complicated to talk and not to give too big spoilers of the work, since it is built on clues, and leaving too many exposed could take away the charm. Even so, I want to comment that the ending left me with a terrible emptiness, because I didn't expect it. I loved the story, but it comes at a very big cost.
The Shadow Msn is a novel that skillfully combines suspense and intrigue with a reflection on the search for justice and its consequences. Katzenbach manages to keep the reader on edge throughout the story, revealing clues and unexpected twists and turns that maintain interest and tension. It also has an exquisite literature, between words, description and setting, is a delight.
In conclusion, The Shadow Man is a gripping novel. John Katzenbach manages to combine suspense and moral reflection in a masterful way, keeping the reader trapped in the story until the last page, with a closing that reels you in and a touching denouement of the characters.

He dicho en variedad de ocasiones que soy muy aficionada al thriller, sobretodo el policial, y John Katzenbach es un rey en ello. Hace aรฑos me leรญ El psicoanalista, recuerdo que estaba en mi primer aรฑo de universidad y la novela era mi acompaรฑante perfecta entre clases. En esta oportunidad, me volviรณ a atrapar con la misma hambre de saber quรฉ pasa y porquรฉ, me lo he leรญdo completo y quiero compartirles sobre ello, hoy les traigo: La sombra.
Es una novela escrita por John Katzenbach, como les comentรฉ un reconocido autor de thrillers psicolรณgicos. Sinopsis

En finales del siglo XX, la vida de Simon Winter, un detective retirado da un giro repentino cuando su vecina aparece aterrorizada en su casa por el miedo de haber visto a un fastasma del pasado. Cuando amanece estrangulada al dรญa siguiente, Simon es el รบnico que sospecha de una terrible amenaza: un asesino estรก acabando con los supervivientes del Holocausto que se encuentran en la zona.
La trama se desarrolla en la ciudad de Miami, donde Winter, un detective de homicidios retirado, vive una vida monรณtona y solitaria, demasiado solitaria. Sin embargo, su existencia se ve sacudida en el primer capรญtulo del libro, cuando nuestro protagonista estรก dispuesto a decir adiรณs a la vida, recibe una visita inesperada con una carta anรณnima que le advierte sobre la presencia de un fantasma del en la ciudad.
Simon Winter, quien cree que ya no tiene mucho sentido su existencia, comienza a desarrollar un propรณsito: atrapar a La Sombra. Durante la lectura podemos ver que Winter es un hombre con una excelente perspicacia e intelegencia, siempre con sus zapatos deportivos, demuestra tambiรฉn su agilidad y porquรฉ era una estrella en la policรญa. Me gusta como el autor trabaja esa etapa de la vida en donde ya no puedes hacer lo que crees que te daba sentido, y mezcla bien los sentimientos y empciones. Simon es un personaje que te provoca una gran admiraciรณn en cada capรญtulo, y su compromiso por detener ese mal que acecha a quienes le rodean lo impulsan a ser quien era antes.
El complemento es Walter Robinson, y quiรฉn es mi personaje, el policรญa quien es asignado al caso de asesinatos en la ciudad. Muy entregado, leal y esforzado, un personaje que demuestra que el trabajo duro te hace un lugar donde estรฉs. La amistad que comienza a tener frutos mientras ambos unen fuerzas es un pilar en la trama que mantiene al lector interesado y con intriga. En cada ocasiรณn, Robinson aprende y adquiere experiencia junto a Winter, una interacciรณn muy beneficiosa para la trama.
A lo largo de la novela, Katzenbach explora las secuelas psicolรณgicas que el Holocausto dejรณ en los supervivientes y ademรกs, lleva dicha temรกtica con gran habilidad a una รฉpoca mรกs actualizada, en donde no es el hecho principal pero le da sentido al los sucesos. La apariciรณn de La Sombra despierta el miedo profundo y una necesidad de protegerse a todos los que son conscientes, y es justo cuando los personajes secundarios como El rabino y Silver y Frieda Kroner y mรกs dan ambiente y credibilidad a la obra.
El autor tambiรฉn aborda la cuestiรณn de la justicia y la venganza. Hay un juego entre temas de la moral y la realidad, que te lleva a pensar como un asesino para ser atrapado. La Sombra, es el personaje sin duda mรกs interesante, no se adentra mucho en รฉl, y se dan pequeรฑas pistas a lo largo de la historia, pero es justo lo suficiente y lo tรญpico de una novela negra para mantener al lector tenso, es un excelente personaje que desde su portada te genera miedo.
El personaje de Espy tambiรฉn es muy interesante, es el plus en la parte legal y quien ayuda en momentos difรญciles, un excelente apoyo para Robinson y ademรกs le da color con su pequeรฑo acercamiento romรกntico. Para este tipo de historias es un poco complicado hablar y no dar spoiler muy grandes de la obra, ya que se construye de pistas, y dejar expuestas demasiadas podrรญa quitarle el encanto. Aรบn asรญ, quiero comentar que el final me ha dejado un vacรญo terrible, porque no me lo esperaba. Amรฉ la historia, pero tiene un costo muy grande.
La sombra es una novela que combina hรกbilmente el suspenso y la intriga con una reflexiรณn sobre la bรบsqueda de justicia y sus consecuencias. Katzenbach logra mantener al lector en vilo a lo largo de toda la historia, revelando pistas y giros inesperados que mantienen el interรฉs y la tensiรณn. Ademรกs tiene una exquisita literatura, entre palabras, descripciรณn y ambientaciรณn, es una delicia.
En conclusiรณn, La sombra es una novela apasionante. John Katzenbach logra combinar el suspenso y la reflexiรณn moral de manera magistral, manteniendo al lector atrapado en la historia hasta la รบltima pรกgina, con un cierre que te tambalea y una desenlace de los personajes conmovedor.
