LIGHTS
Winter had touched the streets in the city of Boston. Every corner was illuminated by Christmas lights; a mix between nostalgia and peace in every footprint marked in the delicate layer of snow. That night was written for the meeting of two souls, a bittersweet collision of destiny.
Tristan Blake, the Celtics' MVP; a silent, imposing 28-year-old in the prime of his career, walked briskly toward the brash museum where his team's New Year's Eve dinner would be held. He was tall, with dark hair and piercing hazel eyes, and his athletic bearing did not go unnoticed. Tristan was known to be a reserved and career-focused man, with no time for love, and on many occasions, no time for friendship.
From the opposite intersection, across the main avenue, Indigo, a talented 25-year-old painter, was on her way to the same museum to lead the art exhibition opening of her first successful work. With curly hair and a seductive voice, Indigo was her artistic pseudonym to do justice to her eye color; she was a confident, eccentric and passionate woman.
They both stopped at the same time in front of the entrance, with the sound of cars in the background and some caroling from a certain store. Tristan, with his elegant suit and cautious smile, stopped as he watched the people going in and out of the place, he was not a fan of social events, but his manager had told him that he had to go yes or yes. Indigo, dressed in a dazzling pale pink dress and high heels, stopped as well, looking for the entrance or her name badge in her purse.
Then, their eyes met among the little flakes.
Tristan was captivated, there was something in that look that made him feel hypnotized. Indigo, on the other hand, was captivated when she met those hazel eyes that seemed to want to shout many things.
Without thinking twice, Tristan approached Indigo and offered his help.
"Excuse me, do you need anything? Can I help you with anything?" he asked politely. He almost stammered, that wasn't him, why was he talking to him?
Indigo, smiled surprised by the man's kindness, and rocked her head slightly searching for the words in her mind.
"Thank you, I'm looking for my entrance card or my badge, but I think I left them in the car", she replied as she looked down and continued rummaging in her purse.
Tristan, with pursed lips and a bit of hesitation reached out and gently took the bag to hold it open while Indigo continued to look through it. Her delicate hands accidentally brushed against his larger ones, and they both felt an electric current run through their bodies. It was as if time was in slow motion at that precise moment.
Finally, Indigo found her name tag hidden among the items in her bag.
"Here it is" he said, showing it triumphantly. Tristan for his own curiosity couldn't help but smile at him and their gazes collided again. The wind was filled with a palpable tension.
He, feeling attracted to the woman in front of him, decided to take the initiative. He didn't know what was going on, but something was happening, and he felt he couldn't just let the situation go, it was different.
"Are you too busy in there? Would you like to join me for a Christmas dinner? Although it seems we are both here for different reasons", he proposed with a shy smile, looking at the badge that contained the word artist in large letters.
Indigo let out a small nervous laugh, no one had ever made her feel that way, surprised but intrigued, she turned her face as if looking for something in that look.
"I'm sure it would be a pleasure to accompany you, but perhaps time won't allow it", she answered, letting out a sigh and raising the badge to Tristan's face. "Tonight is my first art exhibition, I don't know what time it ends, and I want to be there for every question of the evening."
Tristan parted his lips in amazement, and read the name Indigo aloud as if savoring it. She was an artist, a painter, that explained her delicate fingers. She let go of that soft bag at last and held out her hand.
"I am Tristan Blake, NBA player for the Celtics; and as soon as I enter the museum and walk its halls, I will be a fan and follower of Indigo's work."
She felt a knot in her stomach and her cheeks heat up. She shook his hand with mock confidence and smiled.
"Indy, next Celtics fan and in good spirits to a possible joining the Tristan Blake fan club."
They laughed, mollified and unwilling to let go of each other's hand.
Thus began the story of a romance that was as destined to happen as it was to end. Amidst the Christmas lights and the magic of Christmas Eve.
But there is no path to happiness without thorns.

LUCES
