A CHRISTMAS ROMANCE STAINED WITH TRUTHS

|A drawing made to represent history|

April 2006

Beautiful Prague was the major witness of this story. Two friends who had been separated by their parents, wandered confused between their feelings and their self-sacrificing personalities. An argument that had become louder than necessary had ended the hopes of a furtive romance, in the midst of adolescence and discoveries Malcolm did not recognize feelings with sincerity and Liz was not good at expressing them.

They had to change their high school, their course and their life. Two little boys who had grown up together like fingernails and dirt now didn't even see each other to take the bus.

The days began to pass with disinterest and apathy for Malcom, every morning he followed the distracted course of his steps, until he reached the pit of his misfortune. It was unusual to see that little boy full of an attractive glow, so dejected and asocial. The downtown library had become his refuge, but it did not appease the pain in his soul, in his heart.

Liz began to surround herself with friends, or so she kept repeating to herself so as not to fall into the obsessive thought of guilt; she traveled briskly each morning to the bus, and concentrated on classes to stop feeling the emptiness in her chest, the sadness of loss and the discomfort of disappointment. She had no shelter, no home, so she would get lost among different hiding places with some students to prank until they were chased.

Time seemed to be willing to accept her separation.

The people around them did not notice the changes that those united souls began to experience, and how their gazes no longer shone with a certain glow of love. The months passed, the distance grew worse and the words, laughter and sighs, turned into oblivion and resentment.

December 2006

Chasing cars by Snow Patrol, Smile by Lily Allen and Ain't no other man by Christina Aguilera were among the hits starring that year on the radio stations, stores had hit songs predominating in the aisles, and men were talking about the Czech Republic's first participation in the history of the World Cup. Previously, they had participated as the Czechoslovakia team for the last time in the 1990 soccer World Cup and although the faith that they would do well in Germany that year was present, the bitter taste of the matches and the disappointment of the defeats had marked the national feelings. There were no other different conversations beyond work and home routines, Christmas passed without being no more than another simple festive month.

As the last day of the year made its presence known, memories and a strange sensation brought them both back to the same place of their first kiss. Liz had separated from her faux friendship group, unnoticed. Malcolm had only left home for fresh air, and his legs had set off on a course of their own accord.

Prague was beautiful, straight out of a fairy tale, it knew the life of every soul and set the stories that took place in its streets with excellence. Malcolm and Liz met on the stairs of the rooftop they had visited together in the past, and their hearts raced.

It was guilt, love, sadness, longing and a myriad of conflicting emotions that prevented the articulation of words. They had not stopped being kids, but the months of separation had changed certain features in their respective faces that unlocked a new characteristic to love, and in the worst and very recondite of cases, to hate.

A backward step on Malcom's part, which might have been judged as flight, but was well interpreted by Liz as permission to move forward first, urged them on with their plans. Their expectant silence, the familiar bustle of the streets at Christmas time and the exquisite smell of the kiosks carried by the soft, cold wind, made them seem to be inside a Deja Vu, a scene so reminiscent of so many years of friendship that it was frightening, anxious, ecstatic.

Both leaned on that wall that had supported them since they were little, but with a stupid distance between them. Sighs and sidelong glances made a shy presence, from a distance they looked like two introverts on a first date, the years of affection had been left in the past, they felt like two strangers, with a very recognizable and inexplicable tension in common.

A hesitant and subtle movement of the female hand, awakened something in his chest. The minutes continued, the approach accelerated and a few minutes before midnight they both lay holding hands. Awkward, awkward, excited.
Malcolm bit his lip.

"What are you doing here?" Murmured afraid to ruin the moment.

"I could ask you the same thing."

Liz felt free and happy for the first time in months, she loved Malcolm, but she didn't know how to say it.

"It's almost midnight and your friends?"

"Mm, those idiots must be bugging someone, I don't care about them" she replied with a slight smile, meaning: I'd rather be with you.

The increase in voices warned them what was coming, Malcom wanted to take all he could from Liz, he didn't know if after midnight he would lose her, like Cinderella. So he turned her toward his body and brought his face temperately closer, determined to confirm the sweet taste of those bulging lips. Liz opened her mouth between surprised and excited by the fervor of the kiss.

The contact was deep, firm, soft.

The delicacy of the movement contrasted with the loud sounds of the fireworks that announced that 2007 was already here. They continued until they were satiated, and the swelling left them susceptible.

Liz's pleased sigh fed Malcolm's ego, which he let show in his smile.

"I'm glad we're friends again, Liz."

That one sentence was enough to end the magic, the happiness, the desire.Friends? Friends don't kiss each other on the mouth with that intensity and feeling. Friends don't miss each other madly, friends don't dig so deep into your chest that they don't let you rest, don't urge you into despair at the thought of losing them forever. Liz knew it, felt it in her chest, but could not put into words the obviousness of the moment.

She let go with a distressed expression and backed up several steps.

"You don't seem to have understood anything, Malcolm."

He frowned in confusion, literate as he was, he was still a man with a deficit in understanding feelings.

"What are you talking about?"

Liz tried to laugh, but it came out as a bitter growl uttered from deep in her heart.

"You and I can't be friends."

─Parece que no has entendido nada, Malcom.
