The Best Cilantro

Greetings, friends who love literature. 💁☀️

Happy Tuesday to everyone!

Today, I’d like to share a short story inspired by everyday life, with a touch of horror. I hope you enjoy it.

The Best Cilantro

“My love, you’re home! The cilantro seller came by today, and he had some big bunches, just the way I like them. This really looks like the best cilantro we’ve ever bought!”

“Careful! Stop right there! Don’t you dare put that cilantro in the pot!” Carlos exclaimed, raising a hand as he struggled to catch his breath.

“What’s wrong with you? Are you crazy or what?” Lucía asked, surprised by his reaction.

“Wait, sweetheart. Let me catch my breath, and I’ll tell you everything.”

“All right, darling. I’m all ears. Let’s hear it. What is it this time?” she replied, laughing.

Carlos took a deep breath before telling her what had happened.

“Look, love, today, on my way home from work, I saw the man who sells cilantro. Since I know how much you like those big bunches, I rode after him on my bicycle, hoping to catch up and buy you one. But he stayed ahead of me, and I couldn’t reach him. When he finally stopped, I wondered why he had chosen that particular place. Do you know where he stopped? Behind a cemetery! At first, I didn’t think much of it, but when I got closer, I saw him gathering cilantro on top of a grave. Yes, my love, on top of a grave! I still can’t believe what I saw!”

Lucía burst out laughing and continued chopping the cilantro, paying no attention to her husband’s words. Then she took some and tossed it into the pot.

“But, Lucía, stop! Are you really not going to listen to me?” Carlos protested, growing increasingly annoyed.

“Oh, Carlos! Do you really think I’m going to believe that story? Go tell your tales to someone else! Look, this is cilantro! See? It’s cilantro! What’s wrong with it?” she retorted, picking up a bunch and holding it up toward him.

Suddenly, Lucía froze when she discovered a molar caught among the roots of the bunch. Judging by its appearance, it did not seem to belong to any animal.
