[ENG-ESP] Being fashionable and being a conscientious consumer/Estando a la moda y ser un consumidor consciente
Hello Friends of Hive! I hope you all have a successful 2023.
Today I'm going to tell you about my experience, on the road to more conscious shopping and consumption. It all started about 2 or 3 years ago, when I started to question that I had a closet full of clothes and I always told myself when it was time to get dressed: "I have nothing to wear! And I would go out to buy some garment, which I often wore only once and left it forgotten in the closet.
Then when the pandemic arrived, I started to watch several documentaries about the polluting nature of the fashion industry, just to give an example in the washing of fabrics such as polyester, nylon, washing synthetic materials generates each year millions of tons of microfibers that end up in the oceans. Not to mention the amount of clothes that end up in the Atacama Desert in Chile, which is considered the largest clothing dump, producing considerable ecological damage in the region. All this made me reflect and think that I could be part of the change in the environment, if I changed my way of thinking and the way I made my purchases.

I got down to work and started to purge my closet and as I took out the clothes, tried them on, made groups to donate or give away and what remained in my closet; I realized that I had clothes, shoes and accessories that I literally bought on impulse or there were clothes that I had the same because I had gotten it in a super offer, I found clothes that I did not like. And this led me to become aware when buying and that many times we buy clothes where the textile is not of very good quality and after a few washes the garment already fades or loses its shape, which also makes us lose our money. I also realized that it is not necessary to have a lot of clothes, that if I have a proper closet with clothes that I like, that are of quality and that I can combine with accessories or shoes, I can go well dressed wherever I go.

Another thing I discovered were the thrift stores and vintage stores that do a great job of curating garments. In these stores you can get clothes of excellent quality and price, I know that many may say: "Oh, second hand clothes! Someone else wore them, etc., etc. I tell you that these garments that are in these stores go through a process of collection, reconstruction and washing, making the garment ready to use. If you still do not dare I invite you to visit some of them and you will see that you can get something you like and believe me it is not granny clothes, you can combine garments and make wonderful looks.
In this process I also discovered not only stores, but people who create spectacular looks and all of them are with clothes bought at flea markets or thrift stores, one of them is Ale Vintage and the store Sincrónica Store.

Today, before making an impulse purchase, obviously I am a woman and I love to buy hahaha, but before the impulse wins me I ask myself these questions:
Do I really need it?
Is the fabric quality?
Does it go with the way I dress?
Will I wear it often?
How can I combine it with what I already have in my closet? And I try to quickly think of some outfits I can make with the garment.
Can I get it cheaper or maybe trade it or buy it from a friend?
If I can get it elsewhere or from a friend who no longer wears it, I don't buy it, or if not, I buy it as long as I can combine it with other garments.

Other things I do is to modify or give a second chance to garments that I already have at home, this can be done with jackets, shirts, you can embroider them, paste patches, paint them or you can do upcycling, which is the reuse of the textile of a garment to modify it or make another garment. In recent years a campaign has been created to create a more conscious, transparent and sustainable fashion. And more and more designers in the world are betting on this.

At the beginning of this year I invite you to review your closet, to purge and donate everything we do not use and to reform the clothes we like. And if you have already done it, I would like you to tell me about your experience.
