Wow, my NYSC journey has come to an end. How time flies.
Today, I officially pass out of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and to be honest with you, I'm feeling something; writing this feels just like yesterday when I was just preparing for camp. You all can remember, right? 😂. But then, here I am today; after all the months of various activities, I can now say, "I'm done."
Also, this NYSC journey of a thing didn't go as I would have loved it to. I think I will have to later start writing a series on it, just the way I'm going on Facebook. I served in a school, and it was my first time teaching; maybe I would have loved to teach and have interest in teaching, but the school I was posted to didn't even encourage me. They made me lose interest in it. I did my best for the first two terms, and I noticed that it's actually not worth it; they just want their students to pass regardless of whatever their grade is, and the students knowing this too refused to buckle up since they know they will surely pass. Long story short, they made me lose interest in teaching even if I wanted to consider it before.
But I'm glad I served there, and I can see what our educational system is slowly turning into; I can't help but ask if those students would be our future teachers, doctors, and engineers. It is well, though.
Beyond the classroom where I taught, NYSC gave me another thing entirely to add to my experience. And that is me having the opportunity to serve as the president of my CDS group, and you all know that comes with tons of responsibilities too, especially for someone like me who would always want to make an impact no matter how small. The funniest part is, I was made the president of the CDS on my first clearance day. I didn't even know anyone, yet I was chosen.
And I have a lot to say about that too. But to not beat around the bush. I started an awareness program in my CDS. Instead of going about every week to clean just the environment as a part of the community development service, I introduced that too, where we go to different schools and teach them different things, health-related. It's not as if we still don't go about cleaning the environment, but we limit that to just once in a month, and some months we don't even do that.
During my tenure as the president, we were able to visit different schools, some we taught them about menstrual hygiene focusing on the ladies and we share pads with everyone. Some we go teach them about oral hygiene and we distributed toothpaste and toothbrush, some it was good hygiene and so on. I'm glad we made an impact in Igbeti, and all these wouldn't have been possible without the support and contributions from my CDS group members. We did all of these things from our own pocket.
Also, I'm glad I made some very good and amazing friends among not just my fellow Corp members but also among the villagers. It will interest you to know that it was one of those villagers who hosted me in her house as I came over for this POP. Though I have my own space here and my rent is not due yet, but I had taken all my bag and baggages out of here since. That tells you how well received I am here.
And now that NYSC seems to be finally over, I can't help but start feeling something and missing a lot of things already. It's funny how we have things we complain of and still feel somehow about having to leave finally, and I guess it's because we would usually have both good, bad, funny, and sad experiences. It is over, and I'm glad this chapter has closed, and I'm even more glad I'm leaving this chapter for the next with more experience, confidence, and a better understanding of myself.
Not only that, but it is not easy serving your fatherland, honestly. RIP to all those who lost their lives serving, and to those who have been kidnapped, my prayers are with you.
Today is my POP, and I'm sure you know that a lot will be going through my head, you know... Life after NYSC. I've been on it long before now, trying to do this and that, but then, today, I'm just being grateful to God for the completion of this. Grateful for everything. Grateful to everyone. Thank you.
Thank you for the memories. 🇳🇬❤️
