God created human beings with love and compassion, but greed has gradually replaced these qualities. As taught by Bro. Eli, the natural affection that once existed among people has been overtaken by selfishness.
The suffering experienced by the poor today is largely caused by the greed of others. Many people spend enormous wealth on pleasure and unnecessary things, yet they refuse to help those who are struggling around them.
This may be because we are living in dangerous and difficult times when people care more about themselves than about others.
The Bible warns us in 2 Timothy 3:1–4 that in the last days, difficult times will come. People will love only themselves, desire wealth, boast, act proudly, speak against God, disobey their parents, and show no gratitude or holiness. They will lack natural affection, break promises, make false accusations, lack self-control, be cruel, and hate what is good. They will be reckless, arrogant, and love pleasure more than they love God.
These verses teach us that the hardships we are experiencing today are the result of the perilous times that were foretold in Scripture.
In these times, selfishness and other immoral behaviors have become common, increasing the suffering in the world. The rich focus only on themselves, while the poor continue to suffer without help or support.
In summary, greed is the main cause of the troubles and hardships people are facing today.
