turn to clear vision
Legalization in New York State is seeming more likely these days. Current Governor Andrew Cuomo's comments make it seem as though his stance is that New York might as well legalize since the states surrounding them are beginning to do so. His actual comment to the New York Post was "for all intents and purposes, it is going to be here anyway." He was referring to the recent legalization in Massachusetts, and the likely legalization in New Jersey. A law legalizing cannabis use in Vermont will go into effect on July 1. Cannabis also is legal in Maine and Washington, D.C. New York also borders Canada, which will see federal legalization this year.
Cynthia Nixon, who is Cuomo's opponent for the Democratic Gubernatorial primary, is making the legalization of cannabis a primary focus of her campaign. Nixon's message differs some from Cuomo's in that she says her reasoning for wanting to legalize cannabis would to be provide racial justice. Racial disparities when it comes to drug arrests are a persistent issue in New York City, despite Mayor Bill de Blasio saying during his campaign that he would work to close the disparity.
One difference between east coast states like New York when compared to states like Colorado is that many of the states in the region have already decriminalized cannabis to some extent, short of legalization. Colorado is bordered by states like Kansas, where reefer madness is still at its strongest. I really think every state that legalized is one step closer to a tipping point at which federal legalization and descheduling will be inevitable.
Colorado is bordered by Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south, Utah to the west, and touches Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners.
What are the laws like in those states? Funny you should ask! They're actually some of the worst in the country. It's no wonder legalization didn't quite spread like wildfire throughout the region.
