Almost every winter the weather is really bad in Finland and that sucks quite a lot. The weather is bad mainly because I am living in southern Finland and the temperature is nowadays something around plus two or minus two degrees most of the wintertime. When it is snowing a couple of centimeters during the night time the roads are awful, especially when you need to hit the road very early in the morning.
I need to use a car to get to work and usually I am leaving from home around 6 am. At that time roads are usually very wet even if there is minus degrees. That is mainly because road service is spreading the salts all over the roads and snow is partly melted.
The weather is not just wet, it is also slippery and very dark outside. Even if you are using more powerful car lights, the dark road surface is sucking all the light and you are not able to see more than 50m. That kind of visibility is quite dangerous when your speed is 80km/h. It means that you have only a couple seconds and your car moved those 50m. It also means that you are not able to stop the car in time when you suddenly see an animal crossing the road in front of you. Finnish roads are crossing relatively huge forests and that means there are also a lot of big animals. Moose and deer are the worst and unfortunately for drivers there are a lot of them. Moose weight varies between 200-825kg and they can be over two meters high. Deer is a lot smaller but it still causes heavy damages, since weight is around 100kg and high approximately 100cm.
In the picture you see the path that I drive two times per day and one way takes around 40 min. I have been lucky so far.
