Blockchain for Beginners 2 - What is a Block?
Hi there, my name is Marius from AlefTav Coding and in this tutorial you will learn what a cryptographic Block is.
Blockchain history
A Blockchain is a computer file with accounts and monies, in other words, a digital ledger (See the table above). This technology started in 2008 with the publication of the Bitcoin White Paper (https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf). In Blockchain technology every party directly involved has a complete digital record of all transactions. In addition, this technology is Decentralised and Distributed, in contrast with traditional Centralised technologies.
A cryptographic 'Block'?
The basic unit in blockchain technology is what is known as a Block. It is a structure that is made up of a Header and some Data. The Header contains, amongst other information, a Timestamp, a Previous hash value, Current hash value and a Nonce value.
The Timestamp indicates the date and time when the block was created. The Previous hash and Current hash are arbitrary character values. The Nonce value is a number that helps to identify each individual Block. Finally, the Data section contains information about some transaction. This transaction may be details about an Amount of money, the Sender of that amount and the Receiver of that amount.
In this tutorial you learnt what a cryptographic Block is. Next time I will show you how to implement a Block in a computer program.
