Hello friends, back to the maternity community to share experiences with my children. Having siblings is synonymous of complicity, of laughter, but also of anger either for games, toys or anything else where the children are displaced by the other, the affection of the parents can be a reason for discord between siblings, these are the most immediate people to the child and who usually give them protection and love, something that children do not like to share.
My children are only a year apart (12 and 13 years old) being Sammy the oldest, the first encounter with her little brother being just a baby was very funny, she did not stop trying to see the baby, the first night the baby slept at home, she woke up several times crying (normal in a baby) and when it happened as the baby slept also in the same room she woke up and it was hard for us to put her back to sleep because she only wanted to be with the baby.
As they have gotten older they have become closer, she has always been protective of her brother, she supports him 100%, however there was a time when she felt and openly expressed jealousy for her brother, for my part I would try to sit one on each leg and tell them this side is yours and this side is your brother's, I would kiss and hug them both. However my husband on the other hand went out of his way for our son because he was a boy and shared sports activities with him, although he has always loved our daughter he has always left some aspects of her upbringing to me because she was a girl, so I tried to compensate my daughter with a lot of affection and activities together.
I remember that my daughter used to sit in the living room next to them to watch sports programs on TV, she tried everything to make her dad realize that she also liked sports. Until there came a time when she gave up because those activities bored her, time has passed and I think she has no hard feelings because she is very affectionate with her dad and brother. However, as a mother in those moments my heart crumpled and I tried by all means to comfort her and keep jealousy away from her little head. Thank God my husband compensated with outings to the mall, the beach and shared with both of them.
Today Sammy is a young lady with a heart of gold, she loves us and shows it with her clingy hugs and kisses, she is very expressive. Her brother on the other hand tends to be quiet but has his funny and playful side. She is his big supporter at school, always looking out for him. This year as a family we have become even closer due to the fact that my son is about to undergo surgery, this has made us be very attentive to him, however Sammy understands and supports him in this situation.
It is important not to show preference for any son because this generates jealousy, discord, the children experience many negative emotions, they get depressed and their self-esteem is affected. Being a girl or a boy does not mean that parenting is exclusive to one of the parents, on the contrary it is important that both parents participate, although there are activities that one of the parents can do better (sewing, sports for example) it does not mean that they cannot do activities together to share with their children. Being parents is not an easy task but it is not impossible either, it is a great blessing that requires patience, wisdom and love.
