Life is often simpler than we think. As we get older, we live it more slowly, with more gratitude and kindness. We give ourselves the opportunity to return to the everyday, to the organic, to those moments where we were happy and that in one way or another built who we are today.

To be happy, all it takes is activating our senses, perceiving, and remembering with intention and joy everything that surrounds us. We rely on that magic that makes us return to simple, meaningful moments that become present through images, people, places, aromas, emotions, or any other element. They awaken memories and sensations. I have a lot of stored and frozen memories; one of them is activated when I perceive the smell of chamomile. Immediately, I go back twenty-seven years to my youngest son as a baby, to the baby wipes I used to clean him with that chamomile scent. My sense of smell is activated, the magic is present. I think of the fluffy blue comforter where I laid him, seeing him put his feet in his mouth, my nightstand with the bottle, the container of wipes, a stuffed lion, the diaper cream, the disposable diapers, my days breastfeeding, my other two young children around me with so much energy, asleep on me. Everything comes to life and makes my heart leap with emotion.

The smell of wet earth when it rains; a smell I perceive, enjoy, and that takes me back to my roots, to the countryside, to nature, to my mother and the few memories I have of her with her long hair and mourning dress, to the scorching sun that burns my bare feet when I ran alongside my brother, to the scratches I got from the barbed wire fence, to the iron gate-like false door to enter the house, large, heavy, and very difficult to open, to the excitement of finding eggs in the hens' nest, to all the sounds that began to be heard when evening falls and the atmosphere begins to darken, to the freshly milked milk falling on my coffee to ward off the cold—all these activated longings produce many emotions in me.

My Aunt Juana's ceramic plates, white and green, decorated with a bridge and buildings, which graced our table for years, have resurfaced. I lived with her for several years, and with them, memories are rekindled: my cousins with whom I lived, the games we played in the street in the afternoons, the scoldings when I went shopping and took too long, the Menudo posters decorating our bedroom wall, our first crushes, the countless falls I had on my bike, those corn arepas I went to buy every morning for breakfast, the chicken soups my aunt made, the afternoons of eating powdered milk with sugar, the times I was captivated imagining myself inside that image on the plate... It's amazing how small details can trigger memories and brighten our day, moments that seem trivial but are not; they are small pleasures that give us happiness, energy, and truly gladden our hearts.
