For a couple of years now my skin has had white patches that looked very similar to fungus but when I went to the dermatologist, he told me I was wrong because I actually had something called: pityriasis alba.

.I guess you are wondering what this condition is about, well pityriasis alba is a common skin problem that produces round or oval spots that extend on the skin that look lighter than the rest of the skin, the spots can look pink (in light skins because it did not happen to me) or slightly scaly at first and the appearance of these spots usually causes discomfort but do not cause any harm. Since I was about 10 years old I started to have this kind of spots on my body and in a fit of ignorance my mom thought it was fungus and I started to apply antifungal creams and take a treatment of 3 pills to eliminate these spots without going to a dermatologist. But guess what? Some spots disappeared but others remained and there began our concern, because my mom imagined a lot of things from my liver malfunction (yes, when our liver works improperly is reflected in our skin) to vitiligo so we finally went to a dermatologist.

Sorpresa, sorpresa: no funcion贸!
He checked me and told me that it was fungus, that I might have caught it at a beach or swimming pool with many people, that it was quite common and that I should take that treatment again... Surprise, surprise: it did not work! So we decided to wait a while because according to us "we already knew what I had", for a while I limited myself from going to beaches or pools because "my fungus was activated" a minute of silence for me, but well years later we decided to go again to get a second opinion and so it was, the doctor just by looking at my skin told me "That's not fungus, whoever told you that lied to you" my face at that moment was a poem haha and there came my diagnosis of pityriasis alba, produced because my skin tends to be very dry and that produces the spots, he prescribed me moisturizing and regenerative creams, neutral soaps and sunscreen every 4 hours to improve my condition.

But as it is never enough, we went to another dermatologist who told us exactly the same thing, so I kept following my treatment, unfortunately there came a time where I stopped buying the things I needed and forgot my treatment, so the spots reappeared forcing me to go back to consultation .... With the same diagnosis, so it's the same treatment and here I go again! To improve every day the health of my skin because something that is certain is that this condition is for life and I must learn to live with it, even though I do not like the way it looks it is not something that affects me much more than that and it is part of who I am.

A pretty funny tip I can give you on this subject is that when the first dermatologist told us that "going to the beach or pool activated the fungus" is because when we leave or spend a long time in water our skin dehydrates faster and when it contains large amounts of salt (beach) or chlorine (pool) the results are worse, for that reason my baths should be short (as many times a day as I want but short) and with soaps that are not too aggressive since these also help to dryness, contrary to what we think the water that falls on our body does not help to moisturize it because our skin is impermeable so when exposed for a long time can end up drying it more and the water we ingest only 10% is absorbed by our beautiful skin so it is necessary to use creams.

Pityriasis alba is often confused with pityriasis versicolor which is a fungus and this confusion is more common than we think, because while one must be treated with antifungals for total elimination, the other is treated with moisturizers and neutral soaps to keep it under control.I will not lie to you by saying that I never gave it importance because the truth is that sometimes I usually dress very covered to hide my spots, there are people who see me ugly or ask me why I do not take anything to eliminate "my fungus" and that makes me feel a little uncomfortable, over time I have learned more about the subject and so when they ask me I can give clearer answers and not feel so bad about myself.
