This small, old and worn book has made me spend hours entertaining myself, unable to take my head out of its pages once it caught me with its mystery.

Aghata's books have this particularity, or at least as far as I'm concerned. Something that absorbs and enchants me.

Hacia cero - Towards zero

🔎 II Blanca Nieves y Rosa Roja

🔎 III Una refinada mano italiana

🔎 IV Hacia cero

De qué trata - What is it about

The new Strange couple is invited to spend a few days visiting Lady Tressilian's house, where Nevile usually goes every year, as it is like her second home. The only problem is that, like every September, the former Mrs. Strange was also invited.

Friends and family of those involved consider it not only a bad idea but crazy, but, following the "modern" (for that time) ways of being that two women who have been partners of the same person are friends, everything goes according to plan.

The meeting generates tension in the atmosphere, discomfort, and also concern, because there is something else that can be felt hanging around the house, something sinister....

Soon there is a murder that involves everyone present in an investigation by a Scotland Yard detective and his nephew, who have the task of finding the culprit and bring justice. Although it is not easy, since everyone could have had a motive to kill.

Mi opinión - My opinion

I must admit that when I started reading this book I was a little confused, not knowing where I was going. It's just that at the beginning we are introduced to characters that don't seem to have anything to do with each other, and far away situations that you don't know how they could be connected.

In the end all these things have their reason for being, and we get to understand why they are linked in the story. It's later on that you get into the real situation, the heart of the whole thing, and you have more peace of mind when it comes to letting yourself get carried away by the story.

At this point I began to like and entertain this book, and that's where I began to forget something that I didn't like at first (that the characters said words or phrases twice in their dialogues).

I already knew there was going to be a crime, as Aghata's books are about this theme, but I didn't know who the victim was going to be, something you start to wonder as the story progresses. When the deed was done and the investigations begin, I couldn't stop reading until I found the mystery.

This is my favorite part of crime novels, how they solve the mysteries and whether or not I got the culprit right. One thing that happened to me is that I was very afraid that I would be disappointed in this one, that things would be so obvious that there would be no surprise.

It wasn't. It is not at all obvious to know who it was, although then they drop clues to keep in mind.

As for the culprit, I liked how well constructed the character was, since every detail had its explanation and they didn't leave loose ends, something that I think is very important.

The end, like the beginning, seemed a bit slow to me. I don't know if it was because the detective was going around a lot, or because I was anxious for everything to conclude and be revealed.

Something that I found a little weird, unnecessary and even unrealistic (although in itself these stories are sometimes a little unbelievable) was the "romantic" part of the ending. I still enjoyed this read very much because what I like most is the mystery and its explanation, the rest I consider secondary.

I would recommend this book for entertainment looking for the culprit in a premeditated murder case.
