Since time immemorial the human being has sought eternal life dreaming and putting into practice different theories to achieve it.
With all the advance of medicine and science, the average life of the human being has not increased. Even the average life is still eighty years in developed countries, and in those countries with health problems and resources, the average life is much lower. In some countries of Africa, the average life ranges between forty and fifty years. Nothing has changed in about three thousand years since the next passage of the Bible was written:
The days of our years are seventy years, and in the sturdy, eighty years, but all their pride is nothing but eagerness and vanity.
Because soon they pass ... and we fly. Psalm 90:10 (BTX)
Given the brevity of this life, which we all know, not all people face it equally. Some, lead a life, as if they would never die. They do not think about death, but concentrate, on how to get the most out of their existence. Some treasure wealth, that they will not enjoy, others seek fame, that after death the world will not remember them for long. For others, life is only a nuisance, it is a succession of disappointments and bitterness. And ... some wonder if it's worth living.
But ... What is life? If we talk about our short existence in this world, as the Bible says.
When you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? Because you are mist that for a little while appears and then vanishes. James 4:14 (BTX)
God shows us in his word and through it another aspect:
And this is the testimony: that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 1John 5:11 (BTX)
Life is not mere physical existence. When the Bible speaks to us about life, it is talking about an inner life, a spiritual life. He who believes in Christ as his savior has life in himself, and faces his existence with joy. In spite of the problems, and the afflictions, the one who has Christ, has a confidence beyond this world. His life is secure in Christ in eternity.
When my heart stops beating, and my flesh returns to the dust of the earth, I know I have a home beyond the sun. I know that Christ is the RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. (John 11:25)
Jesus tells us: I AM LIFE (John 14: 6)
