After the popularity of his cartoon, and as with most popular animated series, the ninja turtles came to the world of game consoles, with an entertaining game, but quite difficult to complete, the popular company Konami, gave us the opportunity to enjoy this game under the name "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II - The Arcade Game", a platform game where we would battle with large waves of enemies and quite formidable final bosses, that would give us headaches and would demand from our part a great level of play to be at the height of the difficulty that was put in front of our screens in a classic of the 8 bits.

In the version for the Nintendo NES, the game could be played in 2 player cooperative games, or in the 1 player format, we could choose any of the 4 turtles: Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo or Raphael, each of them with their special weapon that gave them different characteristics for their attacks and execution speed, the character selection was very personal, as some were inclined to weapons with long range at the cost of attacks a little slower with Donatello, while others, as in my case, we were inclined to much faster characters, such as Raphael or Michelangelo, being Leonardo the character with much more balanced attack traits, personally, I preferred faster attacks, since the enemies were very skilled and it was too easy for the enemy to hit us.

The blows that we could execute were quite basic, with the A button we jumped and we could give direction and press B to give an aerial kick, as I show you in the image on the right, while from the ground, we could execute simple and precise attacks with the B button, but this was something with which we had to be very careful, because after giving a blow, we were a little exposed and we could even be caught by one of the enemy ninjas, and in case of being caught, our life bar was reduced by 2 points, having only 2 lives from the beginning of the game.

Personally, I consider that the game was very well elaborated, being able to mention as positive aspects, the fact that at the beginning and after fighting the final bosses in each stage, we were shown some images of the events of the moment with a design very much in the style of a comic book, and my readers will understand, that for those dates, and even nowadays, a comic book was a very entertaining option for us as youngsters, reading them was quite entertaining, and having something similar inside a video game in which we were playing the role of one of our shelled heroes, was something really epic.

Shredder, who was the boss of all the ongoing villains in this animated series, would kidnap April (a friend of the young turtles) and our master Splinter, causing destruction and taking us on an adventure on the trail of his henchmen, to finally save our friends.

As a negative aspect of the game, all those who have enjoyed it, remember that recovering our life was quite complicated, as it was a rather scarce element within the game, being nonexistent in the first world, and appearing the first recovery of life in the form of pizza until the beginning of the second level, this was something complicated, as I mentioned before, it was very easy to lose life, even, no matter how careful we were, we ended up losing at least one life to complete the first level of the game, I think it could have been improved, just by including at least 1 pizza in the middle of each level, in order to have a better chance of success in our adventure game.

Each boss represented a somewhat complicated challenge, there were quite noticeable movement patterns, but even so our life bar and amount of lives, limited us to perform attacks with some insecurity, because each boss had quite variable attacks, so we had to take each final battle with patience to succeed.

Next I will leave you a series of screenshots I managed to take of the final battle against the first boss:

A game that despite having some deficits, was quite complete from the point of view of programming and animation of scenarios, although the main thing was always the fact of having had the opportunity to handle our favorite characters from the series and be responsible for the triumph against evil, something unthinkable when this cartoon was released on television.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II - El Juego de Arcade

PORTADA.png
