We all do it, even if we say we don’t.
The new year brings about feelings of a fresh start and we can’t help but think,
"this year, I am going to do ____!”
In my early 20’s I said, having a new years resolution was stupid. It was because I felt like there was a fault with the idea. In reality I was going about resolutions wrong. I thought I would share my discovery in the case it helps someone out.
CHOOSE A WORD NOT A RESOLUTION!
Finding the Root
Instead of choosing something I am going to do more of or do less of (a traditional resolution), I chose to identify the root of the problem that has triggered a need for improvement in the first place. From what I have found is that a majority of our current persona issues boil down to a specific root. Yes, there are a lot of roots, but some are much larger than others. If you write down all of the things you want to improve upon and then write down the root cause for why you do whatever that thing is you want to change, you will quickly notice a trend. That trend is the start to discovering your root.

A Focus Word is a word that you want to work towards. It is a word that directly influences your root and changes it in a positive way. It is a word that inspires you and helps you look forward, not backward.
A Focus word is focused on solving the root problem. This includes:
The Results
By focusing on a word, I wasn’t focusing on the problem, but rather focusing on the solution. My mind was set on the solution which made it more productive to my success. I identified with my word instead of my problem which propelled me in the direction I needed to go in.
My root for 2017 was a lack of respect for time.
I chose the word “efficiency” to combat my root. If I could work on being more efficient, I could get my work done on time, I could not be late to things, I could fit more things into my schedule.. you get the point
Focus Word - Efficiency
Affirmation - I am Efficient
Question - What is the best way to do this, What is most important for me to work on.
By asking myself every day, “what is the best way to tackle today” “whats the most efficient way of doing this” I have gotten a promotion, doubled my income, found myself being able to work smarter, not harder, and most importantly become a dependable person. This, has been life changing.
My Root, My Focus Word, Affirmation & Questions for a few years prior were:
2016
Focus Word - Worthy
Affirmation - I am Valuable, I am Worthy
Question - Does this have anything to do with me, or my purpose.
Result: Quit my job that I hated, professionally pursued my passion in photography, removed myself completely from a toxic relationship
2015
Focus Word: Powerful
Affirmation - I am Powerful
Question - In 5 years from now, will x situation matter?
Result: Lost 45lbs (180lbs to 135lbs) and stayed at my ideal weight, confidence in my body, standing up for myself and saying no to peer pressure, bought a house
CHALLENGE
I challenge you, my fellow steemians, to not pick a new years resolution, but a specific word that you want to focus on for the year. Create an affirmation and put it everywhere, ask yourself questions related to this word, and challenge yourself to be a better version of yourself this year than you were last year..
This time next year, you will be thankful you did.
My word for this year? Balance
