@iriswrite's proposal to the Green Zone, Invitation here I am to talk a little about my vital spaces although for sure, maybe you don't know what it's about 馃ぃ
M谩s all谩 estaba la sabana.
Well, look, what can I say, I was born in the middle of the countryside... my grandparents say that with the edge of a machete they would open a clearing in the marabou and plant a house. There was a river, a small coffee plantation, poultry and wild birds, oxen, dogs, horses, and tractors from the Mesozoic era (so to speak).
Further beyond was the savannah. And then the sugarcane fields. That was my childhood, and I was happy. I'm sure that place, now lost in the marabuzazas, was my living space.
But after a few published books and having written around twelve hundred fiction stories (believe me, I'm not exaggerating), one would think I'd have it figured out.
The truth is, I don't.
All铆 no solo creo historias; tejo atm贸sferas, respiro el aire que mis personajes van a respirar.
The answer becomes more complex with time, not simpler. It must be that, deep down, what is vital is that which makes us feel good, let's say fulfilled, with that rare and precious sensation that all the screws and nuts of the universe, at least for a moment, fit into their rightful place.
Well, if that's the case, I can say that my quintessential living space, the most fertile and recurrent one, is in front of my computer. It's not the mere device, but the ritual: the screen lit up like a portal, a blank page full of challenge and promise, and an absolute silence around me that is not emptiness, but fullness.
In that sanctuary of quiet, with three or four ideas swirling in my head like planets seeking their orbit, is where the magic can happen. There, I don't just create stories; I weave atmospheres, I breathe the air that my characters are going to breathe. I do it to feel that I am doing something good, something worth communicating, that might strike a chord in someone, somewhere.
And I impose upon myself the task, almost like a priesthood, to do it with an exquisite dignity, caring for every word, every pause, with the respect that the craft of narration deserves. That is the nucleus, the gravitational center of my creative world. I cannot deny it.
At the same time, I also believe that a living space cannot be a cell, no matter how gilded. It needs extensions, satellites that orbit that center. Perhaps that ritual moves to my house, in the living room armchair with a notebook in my hands, where the afternoon light is softer. Or, even better, in the library of an old Catholic church, where the smell of old paper and polished wood mixes with the weight of centuries, of whispers and prayers that saturate the bookshelves.
The environment would not be a mere backdrop; it is a silent assistant that every writer appreciates. My living space could also be the quiet park, on one of those yellow, slow afternoons where the sun falls like a tongue of fire, gently caressing all things possible, gilding the world's contours and melting reality with imagination. Without a doubt, in any of those places, that is where my living space would be.
Sometimes, the call is more primitive. I could be on the shore of a beach, any beach, preferably deserted, without many people around me. Just the sea and me. That could be the living space of the pre-word, of the germ.
Here, I can talk with my characters. I can understand their deepest desires and truly listen to them. That's how Archimedes arrived, a giant of earth and bone who appeared in my unpublished novel without me summoning him. He was simply there, occupying a space I hadn't granted him, and with a peasant's stubbornness, he began to take over page after page...
His story, against all odds, began to grow... like a tree. He ceased to be a shadow and became a man with a life of his own, unpredictable. He had a partner, a woman as silent and strong as he was. Then, almost without me noticing, he had a mule, a stubborn animal that was the perfect reflection of his own character. And later, in a twist I didn't see coming, he was imprisoned. I still don't know the reason; it's a secret the novel guards jealously. I'm sure that one day, when I finally manage to finish this labyrinth, I will learn the truth. Archimedes will take care of that, I'm sure.
He works the land and his hands are more tool than flesh. And he likes to sing rancheras. Those songs of heartbreak and cantinas aren't heard on my sound system when I write about him; silence is my companion. But I know, with an almost absolute certainty, that in Archimedes's heart there is a constant, distant drum that never stops beating to the rhythm of those stories. It's the music of his soul, a heartbeat that is there, as real and as much his as the man himself who resists being just ink and paper.
Well, as I was saying, my living space could also be nourished by the tranquil, rhythmic sound of the waves licking my feet, waves transformed into muses. The blue immensity before me would erase the noise, the doubts, and leave me with only the essential. The stories would arrive on the saline breeze and be stored in a place so that I, with a bit of luck, could decipher them in front of the screen. That's it.
After so many years and so many words, I have learned that a living space is not a state of mind. The discipline of the desk and the freedom of the beach; the seclusion of the library and the epiphany of the park.
Moments in which, regardless of the place, the exterior world recedes and the interior one expands, allowing that something good which deserves to be told to finally find its path and its form with exquisite dignity.
