My work as a fiction writer has led me to understand a fundamental truth that, paradoxically, manifests itself in the solitude of the blank page: the writer is, in essence, an archaeologist of themselves. My profession, more than weaving plots or inventing scenarios, is, above all, a process of introspection, a journey into the depths of my own being to unearth those emotions and experiences that will later give shape and, above all, authenticity to the characters who inhabit my stories.
I don't usually seek external inspiration; instead, I dig deep into my own inner terrain. For some, it may be an act of courage, sometimes uncomfortable, but always deeply rewarding. In the deepest recesses of my memory and emotions lie powerful tools to bring to life characters who breathe, who feel, who make mistakes, and who, above all, are believable to the reader.
Creating a story ruled by fear, for example, leads me to remember and revisit that feeling of paralysis that once gripped me when faced with real danger, or the anxiety I felt at the uncertainty of imminent failure. It's in this "unearthing" of my own vulnerability that I find the right words, the precise description of the lump in my throat, the cold sweat, the aloof look that betrays the internal battle. Talking about love, in its many facets... romantic love, which makes you float and, at times, crash... paternal love, the unconditional force that drives you to protect... fraternal love, that is, the defiant complicity of time and distance... whatever its variants... talking about it, let's say, so that my female protagonist, a woman struggling to rebuild her life, for example, after a devastating loss, for it to feel authentic, must connect with my own experiences of love, with the joy of a reunion, but also with the emptiness of a goodbye, with the melancholy of a memory. It's not about copying my own experiences, but about understanding the essence of that emotion, then distilling it and applying it to the context and personality of my character.
Anger, frustration, envy, overflowing joy, tenacious hope... all these emotions are buried treasures in my psyche. As writers, we have the privilege and responsibility to act as paleontologists of the human soul. We unearth the fragments of past experiences, wipe away the dust of oblivion, and reconstruct them to give them form, to give them voice through our characters.
This process of introspection is not an easy path. Sometimes, when delving into the past, one comes across issues one would rather leave buried. There are chapters of our lives we would rather forget, pains we have tried to numb. But the authenticity of a character lies precisely in their humanity, and humanity is nourished by both our lights and our shadows. A character who only feels joy or anger seems flat, unreal. It is in their contradictions, their hidden fears, their desires, where their truth lies. The verisimilitude of the narrators.
My blog on Hive, in fact, has become a crucial space for this exercise. The discipline of writing daily forces me to confront ideas, verbalize thoughts, and process emotions. Often, an article that I begin with a superficial reflection on a topic of the day ends up unearthing an unexpected connection to a personal experience, a memory, which then becomes the seed for a character or a new dimension for an existing one. It's a constant dialogue with myself and my readers. I know that every facet of human experience, however fleeting or insignificant it may seem at the moment, has the potential to bring something extraordinary to life in fiction.
This personal archaeology also teaches me to see the world through different eyes. A gesture, a word, a WhatsApp message, a glance... sometimes, I use these as clues that help me understand the emotional complexity of others, and therefore enrich the construction of my characters, striving to be empathetic, perceptive, and ready to grasp the subtleties of human behavior.
Ultimately, what we seek when reading a given author is that glimpse of our own humanity in the fictional lives of the books. And that is only achieved when the writer has had the courage to look within themselves and act with literary honesty. To do so, they must unearth their own emotions and imbue their stories with an authenticity born of inner truth.
So, fellow writers and dear readers, I encourage you to unearth our forgotten fears, our lost loves, and our fleeting joys. Because in that act of inner courage lies the secret to giving voice to those characters who, once born from our own essence, take on a life of their own and conquer the hearts of those who discover them.
