This tree is famous for its stunning fall colours. It is the most widespread deciduous tree in the eastern USA and eastern Canada. It grows well in both wet and dry conditions, poor and rich soils, and in low lands and high lands. This tree has distinctive bulls eyes in its bark. It has opposite branching, which means at least some of its branches grow off a larger branch directly opposite each other.
