Stoney Creek Metropark - My Actifit Report Card: June 18 2023
Hey Actifitters,
Yesterday started earlier than most Sundays because of the heat in the forecast: I got up earlier so we could go for a first walk with Kaia before it got too hot. It was nice in the forest shade.
As always, Kaia went on exploring and chasing critters.
We walked for a while, but the sun was getting stronger, and piercing through the leaves.
Kaia was visibly suffering from the heat and making funny faces. So we didn't stay much longer and walked back home.
With Monday being a holiday for Juneteenth, one of my friends planned a bbq in the evening. Since she lives close to one of the large parks in the area, I decided we would also go for a few miles there first. Great way to whet your appetite. Of course, I was very late compared to the original plan and we only got there late afternoon. We parked at one of the first spots we found. Even if it wasn't next to the lake, we could already feel it was gonna be really crowded. So we headed to the wooded area first. Very similar to our forest, except some hints at a former zip line.
But Kaia was very excited with all the new scents.
The forest part is pretty short, and we arrived quickly near the main beach. So crowded! That's not really my thing, so we walked past it quickly. Once again Kaia impressed me with how mellow she was, never reacting to any distractions, except a little bit for a few tiny dogs getting in her face. And finally we arrived to the best part along the shore, but without the crowd.
I never tried Stand Up Paddle, and never really thought about it. But when I see this, I can really imagine Kaia and I enjoying it. Like I already said a few weeks ago, I am also sure Genepi would have liked such activity very much.
We kept walking along the shore enjoying the many great views.
We had a short break there, for Kaia (and yes, me too) to rest a bit. I can't help to brag a bit here, Kaia was an attraction and got compliments from almost everybody we met on the way.
We made plenty of short breaks. Kaia was getting tired apparently. Yes, that's a yawn!
We spent some time observing this duck family. Interesting how the mother started in the front, and slowly glided to the back, keeping an eye on Kaia who was extremely impatient to get closer.
In this park, I like how the main path stays close to the lake.
But after about 2 miles, it was time for a longer break, and also to turn around because we were already late for the BBQ. This bench under the tree shade was the perfect location.
We just rested there, enjoying the view.
I actually prefer visiting this park in winter, when it's all snowy and the lake frozen. But right now, it's great too because we still have all the green colors from Spring and even the flowers. I find the green/blue contrast really beautiful.
On the way back, with the sun getting lower, the colors started to change.
But still plenty of people and boats on the lake.
I couldn't resist, I had to play a bit with photos of this gazebo thing and the setting sun.
I guess every park in the area has some of those tables. Keeps your feet cool!
Just before exiting the forest area where we started, I noticed a small path leading to a tiny beach. It was a great final view and Kaia could finally cool down in the water for a few minutes. I realize I haven't participated in the #AroundTheWorld contest in a very long time. One reason is that we always go to the same forest, and even if we go somewhere else, I tend to forget. Well I think this park is worth featuring in this contest. So many great views I wasn't sure which one to pick for it, but I finally landed on the one below.

All in all, about 4 miles along the lake. It was great but next time we will have to get there earlier so we can complete the full 6+ miles loop.
After the walk, we quickly went to our bbq. Good steaks and good wine, nothing better to finish a great day like this one.
