Last March, the mythical album The Dark Side of the Moon belonging to the no less mythical British progressive rock band, Pink Floyd, celebrated its first 50 years since its release, and despite the time elapsed, it still enjoys an extraordinary health, and without the slightest indication that this may crack in the coming decades, or even centuries.

This eighth work of this cult group, includes within its thematic aspects such as conflict, greed, conflict, the meaning of life, fear of death and finally, mental illness, the latter particularly due to the deteriorated state of health of one of its founding members and the first leader of the group, Syd Barrett, which would lead him a few years later to seclude himself in his parents' house until the time of his death.

Incredibly, and probably against all odds, the album became a commercial success, to the point of selling nearly 50 million copies around the world, and to hold the Guinness World Record as the album with the longest tenure in the Billboard 200, where it remained for a period of 977 weeks, which represents almost 19 years, a not insignificant figure.

However, not only Pink Floyd released material in that remote year of 1973, but also other great bands or artists such as Mike Olfield, a British multi-instrumentalist who debuted with his album Tubular Bells; while another cult group considered by many music critics as "The Third Person of the Holy Trinity of British Rock", The Who, released their sixth studio album and their second rock opera entitled Quadrphenia, which would later be made into a film, as had happened years before with Tommy.

On the other hand, Elton John surprised the music industry and his legion of fans, when in January 1973 he released Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player, his sixth studio album which included the single Crocodile Rock, among other tracks. Subsequently, in October of the same year, he released his seventh album titled Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which included the hits: Candle in the Wind, Bennie and the Jets, and the song that gave the album its name, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. It seems that the muse of creativity accompanied John during that year, keeping him permanently active.

Also Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & the Wings, David Bowie released albums that year, while on the other side of the big pond, American bands did not lag behind their British counterparts, and that is when we find Lynnyrd Skynnyd with their debut album, (Pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd), which included the song Free Bird, an icon of southern rock.

Also another American band, but originally from Boston, Aerosmith would debut that year with their eponymous album, which includes the song Dream On, particularly my favorite song of the group, without detracting from the rest of their work.

It seems that 1973 was a very prolific year in their musical production, and the decade of the 70's meant the birth of genres such as heavy metal, punk rock, glam rock, jazz rock, among others, while it also meant the consolidation of hard rock and progressive rock, which, the latter, entered at the end of the decade in a deep crisis, which forced its main exponents such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes or Genesis to dissolve or reinvent themselves to reach new audiences before the avalanche of desertions within their ranks of fans, before the rise of disco music, led by the High Priestess Donna Summer and having as their aides-de-camp Gloria Gaynor and the Bee Gees.

El pasado mes Marzo, el mítico álbum The Dark Side of the Moon perteneciente a la no menos mítica banda británica de rock progresivo, Pink Floyd, celebró sus primeros 50 años desde que vió la luz, y a pesar del tiempo transcurrido, aún goza de una extraordinaria salud, y sin el menor indicio que esta pueda resquebrajarse en las próximas décadas, o incluso, centurias.

Este octavo trabajo de esta agrupación de culto, incluye dentro de su temática aspectos tales el conflicto, la avaricia, el significado de la vida, el miedo a la muerte y finalmente, la enfermedad mental, esta última, particularmente por el deteriorado estado de salud que presentaba a la fecha quien fuese uno de sus miembros fundadores y el primer líder de la agrupación, Syd Barrett, que lo llevaría unos pocos años después a recluirse en la casa de sus padres hasta el momento de su muerte.

Increíblemente, y probablemente contra todo pronóstico, el álbum se convirtió en un suceso comercial, al punto de vender cerca de 50 millones de copias alrededor del mundo entero, y de ostentar el Record Guiness como el disco con la mayor permanencia dentro de la lista Billboard 200, donde estuvo por un lapso de 977 semanas, lo que representa casi 19 años, una cifra nada despreciable.

Sin embargo, no sólo Pink Floyd publicó material en aquel remoto año de 1973, también lo hicieron otros grandes bandas o artistas como Mike Olfield, multiintrumentista británico que debuta con su disco Tubular Bells; mientras que otra agrupación de culto y considerada por muchos críticos musicales como "La Tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad del Rock Británico", The Who, lanzaba al mercado su sexto álbum de estudio y su segunda ópera rock titulada Quadrphenia que posteriormente sería llevada al cine como años atrás había sucedido con Tommy.

The Great Gig in the Sky - Pink Floyd

The Great Gig in the Sky is the fifth track on the album The Dark Side of the Moon, composed by keyboardist Richard Wright. Its lyrics are inspired by the sadness and inevitability of death.

Singer Clare Torry who performs the vocal part on the original track, was only given as instructions to: "Think of death or something horrible and sing", after which, after Roger Waters asked her to record a third take, she left the studio in shame and apologizing to all the band members and technical staff there, and without collecting the £30 pay she was due for her work.

The Great Gig in the Sky (en español, El Gran Concierto en el Cielo) es el quinto tema del álbum The Dark Side of the Moon, compuesto por el tecladista Richard Wright. Su letra está inspirada en la tristeza y la inevitabilidad de la muerte.

A la cantante Clare Torry quien interpreta la parte vocal en el tema original, sólo le dieron como instrucciones que "Piensa en la muerte o en algo horrible y canta", tras lo cual, luego de que Roger Waters le pidió que grabara una tercera toma, salió avergonzada del estudio y pidiendo disculpas a todos los miembros de la banda y al personal técnico que allí se encontraba, y sin recoger la paga de 30 libras esterlinas que le correspondía por su trabajo.

Love Reign O'er Me - The Who

Love Reign O'er Me is a song written by guitarist and composer Pete Townshend included in Quadrophenia.

It is a power ballad with which the album's story concludes. It was a recurring theme in the band's live performances for many years. It reached position number 76 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Its lyrics describe the personal crises that Jimmy, the protagonist of Quadrophenia, carries on his shoulders, who finds spiritual redemption under a torrential downpour.

Love Reign O'er Me es una canción escrita por el guitarrista y compositor Pete Townshend incluida en Quadrophenia.

Es una power ballad con la que concluye la historia del álbum. Fue un tema recurrente en las presentaciones en vivo de la banda por muchos años. Alcanzó la posición número 76 en la lista discográfica estadounidense Billboard Hot 100.

Su letra describe las crisis personales que lleva a cuestas Jimmy, el protagonista de Quadrophenia, quien encuentra la redención espiritual bajo un torrencial aguacero.

Free Bird - Lynnyrd Skynnyrd

Free Bird is a song by the American Southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, included on their debut album, titled (Pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd).

It opens with a slow piano ballad, and gospel organ sound. It has an instrumental part of approximately four minutes, which in live performances could be extended for longer, of a guitar counterpoint, in the form of a duel.

The magazine Rolling Stone places it in position number 193 in its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", and the magazine Guitar World places it in third place in its list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Solos in History".

Dream On - Aerosmith

Dream On was the first single taken from the debut album of the American band Aerosmith. The song was written by vocalist and frontman Steven Tyler in 1965, when he was only 17 years old, and was the band's first hit.

The song reached number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine placed it at number 172 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", then placed it at number 173 in 2010, and then repositioned it at number 199 in its 2021 listing.

In this opportunity, I'm not going to post a video of Steven Tyler and his gang, instead, I'm going to share an instrumental version I recorded during a performance I attended of the Experimental Rock Orchestra (Orquesta Experimental de Rock), a group of young students from the "Vicente Emilio Sojo" Conservatory (Conservatorio Vicente Emilio Sojo) in Barquisimeto, the city where I live, and which has been called the "Musical Capital of Venezuela", among other reasons for having been the birthplace of great artists such as Gustavo Dudamel, current conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and previously of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; guitarist Felix Martin, a rock, jazz and world music performer who has shared the stage or accompanied renowned artists on their tours, such as Steve Vai, Mike Portnoy, Billy Shehan, among others.

In addition, the city hosted for 15 editions the "International Jazz Festival of Barquisimeto" in which outstanding performers of this complex musical genre, both local and national, as well as artists from Latin America, the United States and Europe.

En esta oportunidad, no voy a colocar un video de Steven Tyler y su pandilla, en su lugar, voy a compartir una versión instrumental que grabé durante una presentación de la Orquesta Experimental de Rock, una agrupación de jóvenes estudiantes del "Conservatorio Vicente Emilio Sojo" de Barquisimeto, la ciudad donde resido, y la cual ha sido denominada como la "Capital Musical de Venezuela", entre otras razones por haber sido la cuna de grandes artistas entre los que destacan Gustavo Dudamel, actual director de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Los Angeles, y anteriormente de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Gotemburgo; el guitarrista Felix Martin, intérprete de rock, jazz y world music que ha compartido escenario o acompañado a reconocidos artistas en sus giras como Steve Vai, Mike Portnoy, Billy Shehan, entre otros.

Además, la ciudad albergó durante 15 ediciones el "Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barquisimeto" en los cuales se dieron cita destacados intérpretes de este complejo género musical, tanto locales y nacionales, como artistas de América Latina, Estados Unidos y Europa.

This is my selection of the week. Somehow, I wanted to celebrate the first 50 years of existence of some musical pieces that marked, and still mark, a milestone, and that are part, not only of the playlist of our lives, but that were resized over time to become part of the collective consciousness of humanity.

De alguna manera, quise celebrar los primeros 50 años de existencia de algunas piezas musicales que marcaron, y aún marcan, un hito, y que forman parte, no sólo del playlist de nuestras vidas, sinó que se redimensionaron con el transcurso del tiempo hasta formar parte de la conciencia colectiva de la humanidad.
