We have reached October, the tenth month of the year, the prelude to the Christmas festivities, and which is characterized by the presence of Halloween, also known in various countries as All Hallows' Eve, Night of the Dead, Witches' Night or Allhalloween, and which is a celebration that takes place on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Saints' Day.

It is believed that its origin lies in the ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, with pagan roots, and which later derived in the Christian celebration of All Saints' Day.

Although the celebration of Halloween is common and of old date in the Anglo-Saxon world, particularly in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and to a lesser extent, Australia and New Zealand, probably because of its remoteness; in the rest of the world it was practically unknown, however, in Spain and Latin America it has been gaining popularity in recent years, mainly motivated by the Hollywood horror film productions that are usually screened at this time.

But regardless of its origin and the existing cultural differences regarding its celebration, the truth is that this date represents the union or extreme closeness of the world of the living and the realm of the dead.

In this sense, I have selected for this week, a trio of songs from different musical genres, but that have in common their theme around witches, a characteristic element in Halloween.

Now, without further ado, I invite you to relax and enjoy the musical selection that I share today on this platform.

Llegamos a octubre, el décimo mes del año, antesala de las festividades navideñas, y el cual se caracteriza por la presencia del Halloween, también conocido en diversos países como Víspera de Todos los Santos, Noche de los Muertos, Noche de Brujas o Allhalloween, y el cual es una celebración que tiene lugar el 31 de octubre, víspera de la fiesta cristiana occidental del Día de Todos los Santos.

Se cree que su origen radica en los antiguos festivales de cosecha celtas, particularmente el festival gaélico Samhain, con raíces paganas, y que posteriormente derivó en la celebración cristiana del Día de Todos los Santos.

Aunque la celebración del Halloween es común y de vieja data en el mundo anglosajón, particularmente en los Estados Unidos, Canadá, Irlanda, el Reino Unido, y en menor medida, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, probablemente por su lejanía; en el resto del mundo era prácticamente desconocido, sin embargo, en España y América Latina ha ido ganando popularidad en los últimos años, motivado principalmente a las producciones cinematográficas hollywoodenses de terror que suelen proyectarse en esta época.

Pero independientemente de su origen y las diferencias culturales existentes en cuanto a su celebración, lo cierto es que esta fecha representa la unión o extrema cercanía del mundo de los vivos y el reino de los muertos.

En este sentido, he seleccionado para esta semana, un trío de temas de diversos géneros musicales, pero que tienen en común su temática en torno a las brujas, un elemento característico en el Halloween.

Season of the Witch - Donovan

Season of the Witch is a song by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan released in August 1966, and included on his third studio album, entitled Sunshine Superman. The track is credited to Donovan, however, his collaborator Shawn Phillips has also claimed authorship, and due to disputes with the record label, it was not released in the UK until June 1967.

It was recorded at CBS Studios in Hollywood, California, and according to Donovan, he and Phillips wanted a "rock-combo sound" for the song and selected some local musicians from clubs in the area, however, Donovan does not mention the involvement in the recording of Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, future members of Led Zeppelin who, at the time, were well-known and much sought-after session musicians in London, and who collaborated on other Donovan works, so their exact contribution, if any, to Season of the Witch is unknown.

In a review for the web portal AllMusic, Lindsay Planer stated, "Few songs so perfectly reflect the dawn of the psychedelic pop era as Donovan's 'Season of the Witch'... both lyrically and musically, the languid, trippy content projects a dark, foreboding atmosphere [and] a kind of sinister tale of paranoia and the paranormal."

Wicked Old Witch - John Fogerty

Wicked Old Witch is the ninth song on Deja Vu All Over Again, the sixth solo album by American musician, singer and songwriter John Fogerty, former member of the band Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Released in September 2004, the album reached number 23 on the US Billboard 200 chart, number one in Sweden, number 4 in Norway and ninth place in Finland.

The track opens with a haunting banjo intro, the quintessential musical instrument of traditional American music, and then gives way to a seemingly endless series of classic guitar riffs.

Wicked Old Witch (Vieja Bruja Malvada) es la novena canción de Deja Vu All Over Again, el sexto álbum en solitario del músico, cantante y compositor estadounidense John Fogerty, ex-integrante de la banda Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Lanzado al mercado en septiembre de 2004, el álbum logró alcanzar el puesto número 23 en la lista Billboard 200 de los Estados Unidos, la primera posición en Suecia, el puesto número 4 en Noruega y el noveno lugar en Finlandia.

El tema inicia con una inquietante introducción de banjo, el instrumento musical por excelencia de la música tradicional estadounidense, para luego dar paso a una serie aparentemente interminable de riffs clásicos de guitarra.

The Witch's Promise - Jethro Tull

The Witch's Promise is a 1970 single by the British progressive rock band, Jethro Tull, which reached #4 on the UK singles chart.

The song was recorded at Morgan Studios in London on December 19, 1969, and was intended as a follow-up to the band's two previous singles, Living in the Past and Sweet Dream, which had achieved commercial success by achieving top 10 chart placings.

Musically speaking, the song was developed from the style heard in the band's previous album, Stand Up, discarding the blues influences with which the band had started its musical career, this time moving towards folk.

The Witch's Promise (La Promesa de la Bruja) es un sencillo de 1970 de la banda británica de rock progresivo, Jethro Tull, que alcanzó la posición número 4 en la lista de sencillos del Reino Unido.

La canción se grabó en los Morgan Studios de Londres el 19 de diciembre de 1969, y pretendía ser la continuación de los dos sencillos anteriores de la agrupación, Living in the Past y Sweet Dream, que habían logrado éxito comercial, al conseguir incluirse dentro de las primeras 10 posiciones de las listas discográficas.

This is my selection of the week. Somehow, I wanted to pay a brief tribute to the approaching celebration of Halloween with a trio of songs that have in common the theme of witches, a common element in these dates.
